I bought an imac friday and i'm not able to connect via earthlink dsl using the PPPOE. I have all the settings entered correctly. I spoke with apple tech support + earthlink = and they have no idea why I cannot log on.

I can ping an ip address through the terminal screen, but cannot ping a domain. When I open IE, I get timed-out.

This is my last ditch effort, otherwise i'll have to return the imac today...and be stuck with my windows pc --- arrrgh!

can anyone help?

I think you're logged in through PPPoE, but not getting a good DNS server. If you can ping, then you're in, but since you say you "cannot ping a domain," that looks like no or bad DNS server. Get with Earthlink's tech support and find out what DNS server they want you to use, then enter it manually. I'll bet that works for you.

Also try changing the order of DNSs in the list. I know this sounds funny, but there you go.

Yep, the order can matter a lot. Sometimes DNS servers go down, and managers are supposed to be ready for this by having secondary, even tertiary servers ready. Alas, this is not always the case-the back ups are not always ready, and the customers get no pages. Explicitly entering a second (if not secondary)server is one way to be ready for that. When the primary server is down but doesn't know it then you have real problems! Switching the second listed server to the top of the list can solve this, and a number of other issues.
