I want to use my G4 as a base station as well as my existing airport (2.0) hub to expand the ammount of my house that can reciewve wireless ethernet. I haven't been having much luck doing this. I'll describe my nework:

DSL modem connects to

Lynksys 4 port non-wireless routerconnects to:

G4 with airport card and airport hub which connects to

G3 tower (via cat 5 cable) andPowerBook G4 via airport and iBook via airport

So I want to have the airport hub in the downstairs and the G4 in the upstairs, both broadcasting on a common wireless ethernet. So far I have only been able to get the G4 to broadcast on a different network.

Is that clear?

Can anyone help?

Not terribly clear, I'm sorry to say. I'm not sure precisely what you're trying to do. Also, while you can run two different access points on the same network, they have to be on different channels. This allows the clients to "roam" from one coverage area to another.

I want one access point to be a computer and the other access point to be an Airport hub.

Let's see if I understand what you want.

You want this:
DSL Modem --- Linksys router
router --- G4 --- AirPort Base Station
router --- G3 --- (Software Base Station)
(wireless) --- PowerBook
(wireless) --- iBook

If this is what you're talking about, I see a major problem - that can be solved by a slight change in network design. I don't believe that the Software Base Station software supports Extended Service Sets, which is basically a number of access points with the same network name but on different channels to support roaming.

The solution is to buy an additional (hardware) wireless access point. It could be from any of the number of companies that build this sort of equipment, including Linksys. I'd recommend shopping pretty thoroughly, though, since the price you'd pay can vary quite a bit.

Don't forget to keep your eyes out for wireless/routers; I recently saw an ad with Linksys' wireless/router for LESS than their access point alone!
