I saw a flier from CompUSA (or some other chain) that offered a way to route your ethernet through the electrical lines in your house, then on the remote computer, you would only have to plug in the adapter to the wall to join the network.

Has anyone tried this? Does it work? I just got a used imac 333mhz for only $50 and want to be able to use my cable modem that's on my other imac, and surf from a different room. The 333 doesn't have airport capabilities, nor do I have an easy way to run Ethernet cable to the upstairs.

Just wondering if someone had any input on it, and where I can find on of these adapters. I went to macmall and ran a search and couldn't find any.

Thanks.

It's called powerline networking. As far as I know, the adapters (not ethernet adapters) are PCI cards, though I don't know if there are any with Mac drivers. Cool? Sort of, though speeds aren't anything to crow about. Also, speed and reliability depend an awful lot on the quality of your house electrical wiring. If Uncle Harvey added a ceiling fan for you a few years back, you could be in for a bad surprise.

Anyway, a search for "powerline network" should get you started. I think Linksys makes powerline products, but it hasn't really grabbed my attention, so I haven't paid much attention to the subject.
