Hello,

I need to network my friends old G3 imac to her new Powermac to transfer her old files. Can any one give me simple directions of how to do this (with the ethernet cable).
I sure its easy, I just want to make sure set the sharing, networking preferences correctly.
The G3 Imac is running OS9.2 and the new Powermac is running 10.2.2.

PS... she does not have firewire, burner, or zip drive for her G3 imac.

Thanks in advance,

Destin

I too am about to have this problem as I am buying a new G4. I am currently using a powerbook g3 wallstreet with OS9 and would like to transfer my data (18GB of files) to the new G4 in OSX. Unfortunately I have no firewire, burner, zip on the powerbook.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

you'll need to get a cat 5 patch cable.

stick the patch cable directly into the ethernet ports on both macs. make sure that appletalk is active on both macs (on osx it's system prefs>network>appletalk, on os9 you should be able to enable it from the control strip).

i think the easier way to go from here (and somebody correct me if i'm wrong), on your os9 box starup the chooser and select appleshare. click 'ip server address' and enter the ip address of your osx box (you can get this from system prefs>sharing - your machine will generate an ip address when you stick the patch cable in).

now just enter your osx user name and password and the hd should show up on your os9 box. take the info you want from os9 and drag it to the osx hd and you're good to go.
