Anyway.. here is what I wanted to say:

I have a graphite ABS that is dying (restart problem... Apple won't replace, since it's out of serial range).

I also have a PowerMac 6500 I'd like to add to a wireless network.

Could I buy Farallon/Proxim's PCI card for this Mac and use the Lucent card from the old ABS?

Would this work?

The Farallon PCI/PCCARD bundle seems too expensive. Looking to save a buck.

Thanks.

The card in the ABS is a full-size PCCard, so it won't fit in an AirPort card slot, but will fit in a Type 2 or Type 3 PCCard socket.

What's the rest of your network look like? And why do you want to go wireless with a PowerMac? For far less than a new ABS you can get a wireless access point/router that has both wired and wireless capabilities...and a brand new warranty!

I'm interested in putting the card from the ABS into a Farallon PCI card (which is made for Farallon's PC Card... I'm just wondering the the Lucent card in the ABS will fit/work).

I am buying a combo 10/100 router and wireless unit.

The PowerMac is too far away from the cable modem/router, so I can not easily run cable to it. So, the PowerMac sits idle. But, if I could add it to my wireless network, it would get more use, I think.

Ok, that makes sense. Yes, the card inside your ABS will fit in a PCI wireless NIC. You'll want to put your new wireless router up as high as you can manage to get the best possible range. This leads to some interesting cable issues, but that's more aesthetic than technical. (You should see the shelf next to my desk: it has my router, wireless access point, second router (long story) and my DSL modem on it, with a nice waterfall of multicolored ethernet cables descending from it...sort of pretty in a techy sort of way.)

It says:

The SkyLINE 11Mb Wireless PCI Card is a PCI carrier card for use only with the SkyLINE PC Card. The SkyLINE PCI Card brings desktop PCI Macintosh systems all of the advantages of wireless networking.

So, I wonder if this will work with other cards like the Lucent card in the ABS... anyone know?

Thanks-
Bill
