I am hooked up to the internet here in my school library via ethernet jack. I can get on the internet fine (obviously), stream la musica, and receive emails. However, when I try and send email, I get an error, and aparently the firewall is blocking that port??? As to why they allow me to download email and not send is beyond me, but is there any way around this problem?

I'm using mail.pacbell.net as my outgoing mail server. port 110, no auth. As far as i know the pacbell server doesn't support SSL.

Actually, you're not. Port 110 is the POP port used for INCOMING mail, not outgoing.

What I think you're running into is the school network admins are blocking access to external SMTP (outgoing) mail servers. This is a common technique used to control spam.

The solution would typically be to use the school's SMTP (outgoing) mail server while you're there. Check with the school to find out what that should be.

Depending on your mail app, it should be relatively easy to setup a second account with the school's mail server in the SMTP server settings.

It could also be that the pacbell server is denying access to connections originating outside of their network.
