I've been using my G4 dual 1 ghz system for about a year with the factory installed Airport card. I boot from both 9.2 and 10.1.5 for various projects, and I've never had a problem using Airport for anything -- printing, internet access, file sharing with my other Macs all work great. But when I try to work in Classic, I can't do any of that. I get a message that says Classic does not support the Airport application.

Is this true or is something just not installed right? I didn't see anything about this issue in the Apple Knowledge Base.

I have put off using Classic but will need it for Quark if I get a new G4 that boots only in OSX.

Thanks for any suggestions on resolving this Airport problem.

The AirPort application for OS X does not work under OS 9. If you have your OS 9 CD, you can find that version of the application and install it.

Thanks, but I did already install AirPort for OS 9. It works well when I boot from 9, but Classic is not recognizing it for some reason.

Ah, I understand now. Classic is really just a shell for OS X. I was thinking you were refering to OS 9 as "Classic." I think, though I haven't tried it, that the OS X app will work in Classic.

After doing tests on different Macs, searching the Apple site and checking with other people -- and getting nowhere -- I called AppleCare today. The guy there said that AirPort is not supported in Classic.

Go figure!

Apple has been saying that applications will all run in Classic as an incentive to migrate to 10. But they didn't make it possible to run AirPort in Classic. This boggles my mind.

Quark Xpress is the only non-X application I have, but it's my workhorse, the one app I have to work in all day, so my path to upgrades will be considerably narrower until Quark 6 arrives, whenever that happens!

Yup, that's a head scratcher. Maybe they don't think folks with a lot of OS9 applications are interested in wireless networking. On the other hand, maybe they just didn't think about it. More likely an oops than a who cares. Anyway, now we all know the answer (drat it!).

This is probably a dumb question, but since you're running Classic, it implies you're already running X, so why not use Airport in X? If Quark is the only app for which you require Classic, then you shouldn't need Internet access through Classic, right?

Actually, I run 9.2 most of the business day because I am using Quark. I have been trying out Classic in anticipation of buying one of the new G4s that comes without 9 installed. I need to make PDFs and print hard copies from Quark all the time, and the AirPort network is how I connect to my PostScript printers. You're right -- the internet connection and file sharing between Macs can be done in 10, but printing Quark files can only be done in Classic.

Someone else suggested that I copy any Quark files for printing to another Mac that runs 9, but that is not a good solution because most of my Quark files have lots of large image files and special fonts that need to be copied with them - - not a very efficient way to work.

I guess I'll just keep waiting and use my current hardware that works, although more slowly than I'd like. I wonder how many other designers are foregoing new desktop Mac purchases for the same reason?

I'm in a similar position, as I use Quark (and DeltaGraph) a lot by booting into 9. Quark 4 in Classic seems too buggy for me. I connect over Airport to a wireless print server. I'm also considering a new Mac but not being able to boot into 9 would be a major problem.

One solution, which is far from ideal, is to generate PDFs of the files you want to print in Classic (Distiller requires Classic anyway--another annoyance) and then print them from X.
