This was posted in another forum here, but it appears that the author didn't repost it in this section (or if they did, I can't find it):

"I'm having problems with my new Airport Extreme BaseStation... I've had to reset and re-configure it a few times since buying it yesterday, because the network disappears and I can't find the BaseStation through the AirPort Assistant or AirPort Admin Utility. After going through the set-up process again, everything works fine for a while.

I've never worked on an AirPort network before, so I may be doing something wrong....."

I am having the same problem identified by this person above. However, I am able to fix it by starting up the the Airport Set Up utility (not the admin utility)...it does a scan for the Airport Extreme basestation, then suddenly the range indicator is at full strength when the set up utility starts its scan...I quit the Set Up utility and all is well. I have had to do this twice.

Secondly, the Airport Admin utility does NOT see the current Airport Extreme basestation. Not sure why this is the case, either.

Anyone else having weird situations like this?

Many thanks for your thoughts.

Whoops. Forgot to post my current system:

Single Processor Mac G4 - 867 Mghz., 768 MB RAM, running OS X 10.2.3

The airport card is not an Airport Extreme card, it is the old airport card that was part of the machine when shipped (about a year and half ago).

The basestation is an Airport Extreme basestation though. All software was installed from the CD provided with the basestation.

Hey, you seemed so sad because no one was responding to your message...well I will.

Yeah, I seem to be having some problems similar to what you were describing with flaky connections especially when compared with my D-link wireless network that I had before. It seemed that at times the connection wouldn't go through for some reason. Right now everything seems like its working with 5 full bars. Dunno why that might be.

As far as not seeing the airport basestation on the admin thing, did you install the new drivers and stuff from the DVD/CD that came with the basestation? Apparently, you have to install it to update the system I guess. After I did this, i have no problem addressing my airport basestation.

Let me know if you get any more info about the stability of the airport basestation

I originally posted the problem in the wrong forum. I didn't repost here because I thought I solved the issue. To refresh your memory...

"I've just reset and reconfigured for the fourth time, but this time I changed the AirPort Network Channel -- thinking that I may be conflicting with another nearby network. I live in NYC and can occassionally see (but not access) another nearby (full-strength) AirPort network. I'm waiting to see this works long-term."

That didn't help. But, I consistently notice that when my Airport disappears, it will come back if I wait long enough. When it does, I briefly see other networks in the Airport menu (e.g. names such as "myhome" or "linksys"). These networks go away after I re-establish connection to my network. It seems like my AirPort network is conflicting with one or more nearby networks somehow. The problem is very sporadic but aggravating.

I just talk to the guy in CompUSA. He told me that there will be a new firmware update for the regular airport card which will make the regular airport compitiable with the airport extreme base. If you have the card right now, you can download it from apple. Otherwise, you will have to wait until apple ship the reguar card with the new firmware which will be some time next week.
