I am trying to setup an AirPort Extreme Base Station by having my G4 direct connect into the AirPort LAN port. The WAN port connects to my DSL. So far I have not been able to get this setup to work.

The AirPort Setup Assistant stops because there is no AirPort card present. With the direct connect I've mentioned the AirPort Admin Utility detects the AirPort base station but I cannot configure the base station. The Admin Utility reports that it cannot open the configuration file.

Can an AirPort Extreme Base Station be setup without an AirPort Card equipped Mac (i.e. direct connect to the base station)? My eventual design is to have DSL > AirPort > Hub > several machines. I don't have AirPort cards (or equivalents) in the several machines yet. Looks like I might need to get them sooner than later.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I can't say for certain, but I don't believe you can do it. Do you have a friend with one? That might get you goin'.

I went to the Apple Store tonight and bought an AirPort card. Sure enough, you cannot setup an AirPort Extreme without a AirPort card. We tried in the store and got the same error. I guess Apple changed the setup procedure.

The kicker with this is that Apple has recently released a Windows version of the Admin Utility, so that more people could get into AirPort equipment. Now they do this! It just doesn't make sense to limit the market (and lock out a lot of people). Sheesh!

Yes it can - I did two of them today. All you need is an ethernet cross over cable connected to the LAN port on the AE BS and then use the Airport Admin Utility (/Applications/Utilities) to set it up. NB: The Admin Utility has to be the version on the CD that shipped with the AE BS - in the case of OS X 10.2 install and use version 3.01 - if you have version 2.11 (default on OS X 10.2) then it will always fail saying that the config cannot be read, or if you do get in, it will error when saving the changes.

Have fun!
