Does adding a wireless Access Point to an existing wired LAN provide protection to the wired computers? Are they less likely to be available to be 'sniffed'?

Setup: I have a MacSense wired router sharing a cable modem with a PC and a desktop Mac. Recently bought an iBook that I want to add to the network wirelessly.

I also bought a Netgear MR814 router. I bought it instead of a a 'pure' Access Point because of the great price and my MacSense has begun breaking down (only 2 ports work now). I thought I could use it as an AP for now and if my MacSense breaks down move it to be my only router.

I was just wondering if using it as an AP would be more protection to the wired computers or does it matter at all? Is a LAN a LAN anyway it's hooked up?

I'll be using MAC Address limiting, WEP, and limited range of IP's.

Also, do the Airport cards support 128-Key WEP?
