hi, i am a networking novice and any help would be appreciated.
equipment are as follows. mac os 8.1 ( open transport using macip manually) win xp and a hub
i cannot get dsl in my area so i must use dial up for internet access. i would like to use the win xp to share internet connection with the mac.
first of all, i cannot get a ping on any ip address i input on the mac but the win xp is fine and connects through the internet.
i have turned on internet sharing on the win xp but nothing seems to work.
am i missing something?
anyone know any web sites or database in which i can learn how to do this?
thanks in advance.

Turning on ICS on Windows XP is not the same as getting it running properly-as you've found out. You must make sure that ICS is using the correct adapters for connecting and that it's distributing IP addresses, that your Mac is looking for an automatic address through DHCP, that you've got the right kind of cables connecting everything, and so on.
It would help if you'd share your ICS settings, your Mac networking settings, the kind of hub you have and how you have everything plugged in, and what kind of cables you're using between the computers and the hub. These items are all very important to figuring out what's going on, and where you strayed from the path to networking.

thanks for the reply.
first thing i would like to ask is that,
internet sharing with a dial up modem is a possibility with mac and pc as you stated. then i would like to go over the procedure step by step.
first, my apple talk control panel is missing the "connect via: ethernet" option. is this the main problem? i am using the ethernet port built on the mac powermac 8500.
second thing bothering me is the version of the open transport( 1.3.1) is that another road block?
thanks for the help.

the internet sharing is binded to the correct network adapter
which is a 3com card. and that card has cat 5 patch cable to the
3net hub. the powermac 8500 is connected to the hub via its
built in ethernet port.
all the lights are on the card and lights steady. i tested all
cable and it works.
wondering if i can connect the mac to the win xp directly by
using a crossover cable?
this is how i set up the internet sharing:
i used the internet sharing wizard and went step by step.
i set the " share internet through this computer" option on.
i picked the right modem to picked as the sharing cause
there is only one modem attached to the win xp.
power mac is using open transport 1.3.1
connect via: appletalk macip
configure: using macip manually.
and manually input the ip address from the 3com ethernet card
ip address.
hope this helps a little.

update on my problem.
right now i have win xp with the modem dial up internet sharing with another pc (running win98)both accessing the internet, and connected to the hub, so i dont think the cables or the hub is having problems.
i think i have my powermac ( os 8.1 ) set up wrong. or maybe i need to upgrade my mac os?
thanks and i appreciate any help!!

success!
update on my ex-problem.
first thing i did wrong was that i had forgotten that i had turned off the "ethernet" extension on my extension manager.
so i turned on my "ethernet" extension on.
second i chose that option ( ethernet built in: ) on the tcp/ip control panel on the connect to: option.
and chose the "configure : " option to "using DHCP server" and VOILA!!! sweet'ole internet!!!
i thank all and most of all my svweeet apple macintosh!!
may long live the fruit of temptation!! and we must take back the education market!( mr steve job, if you are listening! there must be a mac that will take back the education market from dell and other evil wintel pc makers)
and also we need to bring down the price of the macintoshes. this may sound sacrilegious but mac must survive and must be relevent!!

I'm glad you got your problem straightened out. And I'm even glad that I didn't have to help you do it! I do, however, like being right about your problem being a fairly simple setting problem, even though I wouldn't have thought to look at that part of your network settings!
