I have just got an adsl account with Demon (uk isp) and am using a Dlink microfilter and ethenet modem to connect ( or at least try).
I can't seem to set the the thing up to connect. Where do I go and what do I type in the network settings in system prefs? It doesn't seem to have an option for PPPoA and under internet connect I only seem able to select the internal modem.
..and yes everything is plugged in / switched on. I am using an indigo iBook 366mhz 320mb ram.

I know you blokes in England do things differently, but....
In the states we use PPPoE, and that is an option in the OS X network settings, however it is NOT available for an Airport card, only your built-in ethernet.
Good luck...

Thanks. I wish it was PPPoE - It would be so much easier to set up.
I have made a bit more progress since first posting. I have now updated the modems (D-Link DSL 300G+ ) flash memory with my login and password details but in order to talk to the modem for set up I have to use DCHP which the modem sets the ip address but to use my isp i need to manually set my ip - when i do this or even when i leave it up to the modem I still cant connect.
I rang the phone company - who, after 15 minutes on hold, pointed me to my isp - I phone them and they try to tell me its down to the phone company then the modem - to get tech support *sigh*
I've been messing around with it for about 3 hours this mornig and need to take a break before i smash something (j/k).
Any help or ideas are greatly appreciated and I'll update with any progress I make.

Just where is the microfilter installed? You should have the DSL modem connected directly to the phone line, and microfilters on everything else. The filters isolate the conventional telephone devices (including answering and fax machines) from the telephone line so they don't interfere with the DSL signal. If you put the filter on the line your modem is connected to you may not get enough signal through the filter to let the modem connect.

The microfilter is conected to the wall socket with an RJ 11 cable running from that to the modem, then an RJ 45 running from the modem to my iBook ethernet port. The equipment connections don't allow for any other config.

As I indicated above, all the microfilters I know of go on regular phone equipment, and the DSL connection goes straight from the wall to the modem. Unless they told you explicitly to put the filter between the wall jack and the modem, I'd take it out and see whether or not you could connect then.

Thanks for all your help guys.
I went to bed last night really fed up and decided to sleep on it and voila! This morning everything works. The only reason I can think for this is that my lame phone company lied when they siad my line was active.
Anyone who uses british telecom will know how useless they are - if I could use someone else I would.
Anyway it's all working now so I am more than happy downloading 10.4 at the moment woot woot
Thanks again guys.
