here is our setup at home. there are 2 network cards in one of our pcs, this one is has the cable modem plugged into it and it is running xp pro and shares the internet. everyone gets their ip via dhcp from it.

i plugged in my new abs and booted up my ibook and dhcp would not get me any internet. so i manually configured my ip address for said winXP computer, internet works fine.

first problem comes when i reboot my old desktop pc and the ipaddress changed to 10.0.0.x, wierd. so i manually configure it, internet works fine on it.

2nd problem. i turn on my xbox for some xbox live and it can not access live. do the tests and it gets an ip but no dns. i check it's ip and it is 10.0.0.x. then it dawns on me, maybe airport is taking over all the dhcp requests and handing out ip addresses.

the way the abs is set up is that it is just plugged into the hub, there is no cable plugged into it.

so i set up the xbox manually and it works. repeat this process for another pc.

my question:
if i plug the cable modem straight into the abs and set everyone up for dhcp will the abs give everyone ip addresses and everything?

thanks,
sorry for the long post.

---edit---
i tried. i hooked the cable from the cable modem into the abs and then setup my ibook on dhcp. i got an ipaddress from the abs but i could not broswe the internet. as if there was no dns server or anything. i setup another pc as dhcp and it got a similar ip address to the ibook and the abs. that one could not broswe the internet either. from the pc and the ibook i could ping each other, so network activity is going on, but no browsing.

any ideas?

Yes, the ABS serves DHCP IPs. You can turn this off, though. The good thing about using the ABS for this is that you will not need the PC on for others to access the internet and stuff.
Try this. UNPLUG the ABS and the cable modem and shut down comps. Wait a minute. Plug in and power up the modem. Wait for it to get an IP (watch the lights). when it is up and connected, power up the ABS. Then do the comps.
If this doesn't work, your ISP probably needs to see your PC's MAC address for verification. This allows them to disallow service to any machine but the one identified by this address. I'm not sure if the ABS can clone another MAC address like other routers do. I'm sure someone here can tell you. Look around, though. Open Airport Admin Util/Setup and see if there's a way to change the ABS' MAC address. If not, call your ISP and tell them you need to update your MAC address on file. Then give them the MAC address of the ABS (this will be listed somewhere in the Airport s/w or in Apple System Profiler. It may even be printed on the bottom of the ABS. It looks like this: xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx.).

i was just comming here to tell everyone that i finally got it working.

i unplugged the cable modem and hardrest the airport. unplugged the airport from the LAN and then plugged in the airport and the cable modem.

opened airport admin and setup the airport (got to rename it too) and then rebooted the airport from the admin util and it picked up all the roadrunner settings and then plugged in the LAN, dhcp on the computers all are working

yay
