Just got a new Linksys BEFW11S4 ver. 3.
We're just trying to use it as a switch and wireless access point, not the router function. It works for Gateway and Dell laptops but not my Powerbook G4 Ti 667.
The network is configured as follows:
Cable modem access run through ver.1 Linksys BEFW11S4 then two 24 port switches.
The new router is attached to one of the ports of one switch.
I configured the new Linksys with no DHCP server and a static lan ip address. The G4 obtains a valid ip but gets very slow response when accessing the new Linksys' web interface and almost impossibly slow response from the ver. 1 Linksys. The G4 gets no response from the internet. Windows machines get fast normal access to both Linksys and the internet. I've tried static ip's on the G4, using the Linksys as a router with RIP turned on, but no luck.
Please if anyone has any ideas let me know.

Have you checked to see if you're running the built in firewall on your G4? That could be a big part of the problem. You should also ensure that the new Linksys is set to "Router" mode rather than "Gateway" mode.

Firewall is off. I have tried running the Linksys in router mode, and it still doesn't work. What I can't figure out is why it works for Windows machines but not my Mac.
Thanks for your help

I'm guessing you're refering to the previous incompatibilites between OS X and the old firmware. Our box's firmware is fully up to date but just to double check I booted into OS 9 (first time in over a year) and the same symptoms were present. Any other ideas anyone?

Actually, I was referring the trick of using a $ in the WEP password.
But if you have already tried everything in there, can you tell me if you seem to be connecting to the LinkSys, but not getting an IP address,or getting a bogus 169.x.x.x IP? If that is the case, you might try setting the Mac to a fixed IP address as follows:
In the network prefs for the Wireless adapter, put in the following settings:
IP address = 192.168.1.2
gateway or router = 192.168.1.1
Subnet mask = 255.255.255.0
Click Apply and see if you can ping 192.168.1.1.
If you can, then you would seem to be connected and all you have to do is to put the IP addresses of your ISP's primary and secondary Domain Name Servers (DNS) into the Domain Name Server box in the Network Prefs and again hit Apply and you should be in business.
If you don't now the DNS IP's you can get them from the status page of the LinkSys setup utility, but I suspect you will have to access that ( http://192.168.1.1) from a wired connection for security reasons.
