Hi All,
I've just pulled my graphite base station out of the cupboard, after several months rest (lent my airprt card to a friend). It's been sitting quietly, in a cool cupboard.
I plugged it in, and all three LEDs just keep flashing amber (listed as "ROM Power On Self Test" in the Knowledge Base). The forced reload procedure has made no difference.
Can anyone help me out?
Chas

If doing a forced reset doesn't stop the blinking, it's a goner. There is a well-known problem with the early graphite models where certain capacitors would burn out prematurely. Apple never acknowledged this defect publicly but they have replaced quite a few when customers called about the problem.
It happened to mine about a year ago. It was long out of warranty but I called Apple and they sent me a refurbished one overnight along with a prepaid freight bill to return the dead one. They never even asked for a copy of the sales receipt; just asked about when I purchased it.
I don't know if they're still doing this but it's worth a try.

Many thanks for that extremely useful info (the good _and_ the bad :-)
I'll contact Apple and see what's what, wish me luck!

Hi All,
I've pulled this ancient thread out 'cause that "dead" graphite base station was resurrected (and has, LOL, now re-died).
I was just about to throw the base station away last week (at last cleaning out my "dead" peripherals cupboard") and thought I'd take it apart, just for the heck of it.
I did so, wiggled some stuff (not much moves in one of these things), pulled the card out and re-seated it, and fitted it back together. Then, just for fun, I plugged it back in.
And Lo! It came alive once more!
And to think I was just about to shell out for a new base station (something cheap, but even so...)
Well, disappointment once again visits: it's died again, all by itself (it hasn't been moved, and has been running consistently for a week or so).
So, this begs the question: the original problem was very unlikely to be burned out components. What could it have been, and is it likely this mystery component has failed again?
Anyone want to join me in working on this mystery?
Chas
