I am trying to get some files from my Win98 PC to my iMac. Usually, I end up doing this by uploading files to my website and then downloading them on the other computer, since I don't have a cd burner on my old pc. However, since these particular files are very large, I'd rather find an easier way.

I was wondering if anyone could tell me if it would be possible to connect the two computers just for transferring the files I need. I have little experience with networking and not networking equipment handy. I only have a regular RJ-11 and USB cables, so I'm not sure if this will work at all.

Anyway, I'd appreciate it if someone could let me know if this would be possible, or if I'm barking up the wrong tree.

Thanks!

You can network together a Win98 computer and an iMac using ethernet cables (the RJ-45 kind, not the telephone kind), or using USB. The ethernet route is much easier, particularly if you're using Jaguar on the iMac. If your iMac's network card autodetects the cable, it's even easier, because all you need is a standard network cable to make the connection.

You'll need to put the files you want to get from the Windows machine into a folder that you share, give both computers compatible IP addresses, tell them both to use TCP/IP protocols, and then use the "Connect to Server" option. You should be able to just select the share name you gave the folder on the Windows machine.

Hi,

I managed to do that. But I can only acces my 'home' folder on the Macintosh HD. I want to be able to connect to my other drive, where I have all the documents and files which I want to transfer. When I make an alias, my PC can't open it. What can I do? When I try to use FTP my PC (Win 98) can't connect to my Mac (OS 10.2.4). What can I do?

In the 'sharing' pane of system preferences, go to the 'services' tab and check the 'FTP Access' check box.

This turns on the FTP server on the mac. As you asked the question, I assume that you can use FTP from here on.
