Want to network a printer

Wasn't sure if this was more applicable here or in Peripherals, but I recently bought an HP LaserJet 1200se that I want to network. The HP has both USB and parallel connections.
The easiest thing to do would be to somehow get the built-in print server on my SMC Barricade (7004AWBR) to work, but its print server doesn't have Mac support. It supposedly has LPR support, but I haven't been able to get that working.
Another alternative is to buy an Ethernet adapter for the printer. I was looking at D-Link's DP-101+ or DP-300U.
Any ideas on how to get the print server on the SMC working or recommendations for Ethernet print servers? I will only be using Mac OS X 10.2.4.

The print server (built in) will not support AppleTalk, but it is easy to get the printer working through it.
Open Print Center. Click Add in printer list. Select IP Printing from connection pop up menu (instead of USB or AppleTalk) at the top. Put in the IP address of the ROUTER and use lp (lower case LP) as the queue name. Select the printer model. Then after it is added, you can get info from the printer list and change the name to anything you'd like.

I did that, and nothing prints. I don't even see anything go to the print queue.
After creating the queue, it shows as follows:
Printer Name: lp on 192.168.2.1
Queue Name: lp_on_192_168_2_1
Host Name: local
Printer Model: HP LaserJet 1200
Any ideas?

Did you then reset the router? Try that. Maybe try a computer restart as well.

I upgraded the firmware first, which reset everything on the router to factory defaults. I've also rebooted my machine.
Is there a way to test lpr printing from the terminal?

Not sure about Terminal testing, but AFTER setting up the printer, reset the router. Try leaving queue name on default (as well as using lp).
If none of this works, hold the Option key down when clicking Add in the printer list. You will now have an Advanced option for connection type. Try LPD/LPR. If still no love, you may want to try Gimp-Print.
Post back with results, if you can.

Ok I tried the advanced option for LPD/LPR but it didn't work. Used lpd://192.168.2.1/lp as the address, no go.
I then tried IP Printing again, and it seems that resetting the router again has gotten me a little further. I can now see the job go to the queue, where it then goes to "Opening Printer Connection" then stops the job for some reason. One time it said that it was opening port 843 (I think that was the right number) before stopping.
Just for the hell of it, I also tried it with my PowerBook plugged into an Ethernet port on the Barricade instead of using Airport, but no joy.
Thanks again for all your help.

I use a USRobotics 8000A router with print server-it's very similar to the SMC box. All it took was associating the port with the printer, and then associating it with a print queue. Oh, I did have to change the IP address of the box to work with the rest of my network, and of course that meant making sure I used the right IP address in the port set up-that bit me in the butt for about 15 minutes!
This print server works fine with my Windows boxes, too, so I can't see it as being terribly complex; maybe it's just not as obvious as just about everything Mac is. Since you've flashed the firmware on the router, you've basically started over anyway, so have you considered the old "go back to all factory defaults and moving ahead one step at a time" approach?

When I set an HP 1200 up for IP priting, I simply used xxx.xxx.xxx.1 (the router's IP address) in the IP Printing set up area. I can't figure out why this wouldn't work.
Give Gimp-Print a try.

You cannot use the same IP as the router - that's your problem. You need to give your IP device an IP (or have it get one automatically via DHCP) address. Once you've done that you add a printer in the print center using the IP address you've just given the IP device (the stand alone print server that has an ethernet port and an lpt port).
Works like a charm - should have it up and running in 10 seconds.

Actually, that is exactly how it's supposed to be set up. He is not using a stand alone print server. He is using a router with a built in print server port.

Still no luck. I have a spare PC that I've been meaning to turn into a Linux box. I'm installing RH8 on it now. Once I get that going, how do I share the Laserjet that is attached to the PC?

Have you tried Gimp-Print?

I thought that Gimp-Print was mostly for inkjet printers that don't have drivers for OS X. The HP has drivers for OS X and I can select it. Remember that it prints fine when I plug it directly into the Mac.

Same problem!
Hmm, I'm starting to wonder if my problem is with the drivers I have installed. I have 2 instances of HP LaserJet 1200 listed. I really want to get rid of all the HP drivers and start over, but I can't seem to get rid of everything.

I have the SMC7004AWBR and got the print server to work using Gimp-Print with a Brother Laser MFC which is not Mac-compatible. Instead of using the default queue name or lp, I had to use LPT1. I'd recommend trying Gimp-Print, even if you already have HP drivers.
