i'm trying to connect to the internet using an smc router. i've configured the router so that the browser based diagnostic reads that i am connected, and successfully pings an internet gateway. the problem is that i cannot receive either e-mails or web pages. i can send e-mails, and request web pages, but after that things get stuck. i've set it up according to instructions from smc support. i have another setup with a static ip address - exact same hardware - and it works like a champ. the only difference with this setup is that the ip addresses are assigned dynamically. any ideas anyone? besides "get another router!"?

Well, you could always assign a static IP to the computer to see if that works. Is DHCP enabled on the router? Double check. Is DHCP selected on the Mac in Network pref pane? What does the DHCP client list say from the router?

make sure you don't have a firewall on your computer blocking incoming traffic. in OSX, this is in the "firewall" tab in "sharing" in system preferences.

Hey call up their Tech Support line, they have a really great tech support that could help you trouble shoot out of anything short of getting a new router or buying a new computer

actually, i called their tech support, and when they suggested that apple was the problem - "buy a new computer" - i persuaded them to give me an rma# and they're replacing my router. this after they'd blamed it on everyone else but smc. also, in my experience - having fried not one but two routers following the flashing instructions on their site and in their instructions - their tech support leaves something to be desired. btw, it was a post in another forum on this site that solved the problem. you guys rock.

There is a problem with SMC's newest firmware. After updating, you will find you can no longer access the setup program using the usual URL. However adding :88 at the end of the URL will allow access.
A lot of people have returned routers to SMC thinking that the router was fried by the firmware update when all they needed to do was to add the :88 to the url (to force the port).
I have reported this to SMC but it doesn't seem to have registered with them.

only problems i had with their firmware was - as they later told me - it would fry the router. they sent me their newest firmware - 1.10 - via e-mail, and no problems with that. but one of their routers that i'm using is ping-able, and can ping, but will not allow web pages or e-mail to come in. in fact, it simply does not function the way a router should. and to top it all of, they have no idea how to run an rma for returns...my 2¢...
