Ok, I've been poking around and can't find an answer here, so hopefully one of you has the answer.
I'm on an old iBook with 9, and my BF is on WinXP(insert pity sex jokes ) along with our roomie on ME. The ME and XP boxes are getting along fine, but I can't get mine to work, it doesn't see my BF's compy, but it does see the cable modem hooked to the router. I'm connected to the router via AirPort(bridged) while the boxes are on a straight Ethernet cable. What do I need to do to connect to his compy?

DAVE, from Thursby Software.
Or use OS X, which can connect to Windows machines without extra software.

No other options? My iBook is too old for OS X, and paying $149 just to be able to share files with the other compies is a bit steep if you ask me.

Are you asking for specific, step by step instructions or are you asking how OS X handles connecting to Windows networks?
To answer the latter, OS X is built with the necessary software "hooks" to handle connecting to and interacting with Windows networks. The specific protocols used, how different network elements are discovered and accessed, etc. were handled by third party software like Dave before OS X came out, and Apple decided that it should be native to the operating system, so they put it in.
To answer the former, it is pretty much as simple as connecting to any computer with a Mac-networked Windows machines (that have some resource or folder shared) show up in the Finder just like any networked Macs.
