How are you connected to the base station? If you're trying to configure it via wireless, that's probably your problem. Try connecting to the base with a Cat5 cable and see if you can get the configuration change to work.

I would try the wire too, but you should be able to connect wirelessly. When I've had difficulty connecting, it has been due to the fact that I had the OS X firewall turned on and was blocking the port that Airport needs to communicate with the base station. If your firewall is turned on, turn it off.

Your talking about the firewall built into OS X or a firewall that is installed 3rd party

I mean the OS X firewall. The Airport software uses port 192 to talk to the base station. I believe that port is closed by default. So if you turn your firewall off you might be able to see the base station. I know I can.

I'm having the same problem with an Airport Extreme Base Station. When I went to the Airport Admin Utility to change my phone access number, for my modem in the Airport, and I typed my password in, the screen just sits there, no error message or nothing.

I finally just reset the Airport manually and then it let me in to configure the airport using the reset password. Why is this happening? I just upgraded the Airport Admin Utility Software and the Airport Extreme Base Station Utility Software. Could the upgrade of the firmware be the problem? Apple are you listening?????

I would bet that the issue isn't a problem with the firmware upgrade, but rather with the documentation. The instructions should clearly state that when the firmware upgrade is complete the password will/may/should revert to the default-your own password will no longer be valid. Of course this should be handled more gracefully than having the Admin Utility just sit there, but that's beside the point.

This turns out to be a complication for just about all SOHO networking equipment-when you upgrade the firmware the box reverts to the default password. For this reason, the most common steps to figuring out why you can't access the configuration of a network device should start with making sure you have a good, wired connection to the box, and then trying the default password.
