how do i check if i have regular airport or extreme. im scared of pulling the thing out of my powerbook.

i ordered extreme, but i seem to be able to connect to the linksys router by "mixed" mode...and it doesnt work with "G-only". and i havent seen any mention of airport extreme when i set it up. could they have putten in a normal airport card??!

anyone know how i can check? the system profile doesnt really show it. thanks

The cards are not interchangeable, so either one will fit or the other. Which PB model do you have?

I have the Linksys 54g router. After I upgraded the firmware I lost the ability to use the G-Only setting. Tech-support didn't have the older firmware so I had to return the unit and get a new 'old' one.

I'm currently running firmware v1.00.8, Dec 24 2002 and G-Only works fine.

If you have a 12" or 17" Powerbook, you have Extreme. If you have a 15" TiBook or an iBook, you have 'regular'.

did you notice any difference in speeds? im getting about 2mb/s transfer speeds with the new firmware in "mixed mode". dont want to go through the hassle of a replacement unit.

I'll max out at 3MB/s for very large files, but get 0.5-2MB/s with lots of smaller files. Transfers were 50% slower when I had the problem mentioned above. Did you check which firmware you're running? Did you upgrade the firmware? Until there's a 802.11g is finalized I think it's possible that we may run into these problems with upgrades.
