i am not sure where i should be posting this, here or the ibook forum.
all of a sudden tonight, my wireless network dissapears. the airport basestation (extreme, new one, no antena/modem) is working fine as our router, and thus the reason i can surf the internet with my other computer. but my ibook will not pick up any airport reception. it got the network but then lost it, this happened for a few short times, and for the first time in my life the reception was not full. right now on the ibook, it can not find the network at all.
i am not certain whether this is a problem with my ibook or my airport.
i have to study for a test, so unfortunately, this is going to have to wait until after college tomorrow before i can troubleshoot it or call apple.
any ideas?

First make sure your AirPort card is properly seated, and that the antenna connectors are fully seated-they're tiny, so be careful.
Next, see what the Admin Utility says about your settings, and compare those to the way the base is configured. I've seen instances where, for some reason, the settings change by themselves. I keep a paper copy of my settings in my desk in case I have to reconfigure my access point (a Linksys), or any of my wireless computers.
Finally, do you know anyone else with an extreme card that can at least let you know that the radio part of your router is working? Since I have more than one wireless computer, that's easy for me, but it can be a reall challenge if you need to get your buddy from work to bring his PowerBook over to test your base station...

Same problem here as well!! All of a sudden the connection goes dead. The Airport signal is showing normal signal strenght in the menu bar. When I turn it on it asks me for the password but then refuses to recognise it. I have to pull the power or restart the extreme basestation to get it working again. All the most recent updates are installed!

Try isolating your base station and keep it away from all electronic devices. Another member of the board suggests that and it seems to work.

Hmm, my base station is situated between a printer and a scanner. I will try to move it around.

Connection drop out is another of the new features for Airport Extreme, it comes bundled with every Extreme Base Station.
I do not have a 2.4 Ghz phone, my base station is located on top of a Library (made of wood) and I lose the Airport network every 24-48 hours. I have to shutdown the base by unplugging from the wall.
So cool I think I could not live without the daily trip to unplug the base station... maybe I can train my cat to do it for me...

Yes, as he above poster mentioned, get the update. This did not come preinstalled on the AEBS however downloading and installing it is a breeze...took all of 10 minutes tops. After that update all my problems were fixed and the AEBS didn't keep dropping out.

i've got the same problem, so i downgraded my firmware, but then some more problems came up,
1)before i'd upgraded to 5.1 it would drop/refuse password,
2)upgraded to 5.1, after hour 3 leds motionless, status in menubar disappear,
3) downgraded, worked fine but now it just drop connection/refuses password/or says network is restricted to my ibook, but menubar status fine/ noticed that it disconnects from network
just bought this basestation from apple store shoud i return it, can I?

dropping the station to 802.11b only fixed my problem, but that kind of defeats the purpose of having an extreme base station.

I have seen so many problems reported here and elsewhere that I seriously believe NOBODY's implementation of 802.11g is ready for prime time. As I understand it, the standard is still officially a draft, though most or all of the wrinkles have been ironed out and the official standard should be ready for publication. Once that happens, it will take vendors a while to get their firmware tweaked to fit the standard, so don't go expecting new firmware the day after the standard hits the streets!

The 802.11g draft has been standardized, and the last Airport Extreme update is for the purpose of upgrading it to the final standard.
Anyway, you may want to try changing channels... every couple of months, my 802.11b goes from full signal strength to next to nothing, so I just change channels on the base station and it clears right up.

I've been out of the loop for a while, so while I'm surprised they got their act together and finished the standard, I'm glad they did. Now, hopefully, the vendors will be able to put together firmware that works!
