My copy of this month's MacAddict came yesterday and the cover story is on Airport Extreme. In it, it says one of the advantages of 802.11g is that it gives you better performance with streaming video over the net.

What I don't get is that if the cable modem is coming through a 10-baset connection, how is the extra 44mb of data transfer from an AE station going to improve my video streaming?

Aha! You've figured it out!

Actually, the "better performance" is better ability to handle temporary connection interruptions, not overall bandwidth as such. Since there is more "elbow room" in the potential 54Mbps max, there is a greater capability to resend fragmented packets, thus improving the overall appearance of the stream.

An ideally configured 802.11b network, one without dropouts, dead spots, and interference, should have no problem dealing with any streaming video that your cable modem can handle. Too bad this ain't a perfect world.

There is more of an advantage than just internet streaming video. Check out Broadq Qcast I plan to set this up, and I would like to communicate with the playstation 2 from my G4 over 802.11G - this is LAN network streaming, and if I want to send higher bit rate video - G will perform much better than B. Has nothing to do with the cable modem, but yes for internet streaming video - B outpaces your modem...
