Hi,

And thanks firstly to anyone who can offer any help here. We are using a network connected to ADSL in South Africa. Internet access is fine and relatively quick (nothing like my connection in the UK), however checking mail from a POP3 account is extremely slow.

Could this be a port specific problem? I believe, from limited understanding, that email comes in on specific ports (110 by default if I am right). Will this have a bearing?

Also, bear in mind that we can access our webserver (located with the same provider as our email server), and that that connection is very fast!

So, can anyone offer any help or suggestions?

Cheers,

Rohan

PS We have an ADSL modem, connected to an airport basestation (Snow) which handles the PPPOE connection. This is then distributed around the premises.

Since a packet is a packet as far as a network is concerned, the only way that you could run into this problem is either redirected ports, or a VERY SLOW mail server.

If your problem is indeed port-related, it's probably not at your end. The ISP you're using may have redirected port 110 (and port 25 for outgoing mail) to some different port for their own purposes. I would ask the ISP for their specific set up instructions for Internet email applications, and make sure your application is properly configured for the ISP. If everything is set correctly, then the problem is probably the server you're trying to use.
