Hi, I have been out of the loop for quite some time now when it comes to networking (last time was under system 7)and just now got an ibook. I need to connect to my G4 and transfer some things. Both are running X. Can I do this just with one cat5 cable and no hub? What do I have to set in the networking control panel as far as Ip address and mask address and all that. Please help because I need to get the stuff off my old G4 soon!

Many thanks!

Yes you can use one cable. it needs to be a CROSSOVER cable.

alternatively you can use a firewire cable and put one of the machines in target disk mode (hold down T when you bootup)

It does NOT need to be a crossover cable. Any CAT5 will do. Macs have been auto-sensing for years now.

Or you can set it up via an ethernet connection. Make sure you go into "System Preferences ---> Network AND sharing on both computers. Check that Appletalk is active and personal file sharing should be checked. Then from the finder's menu, hit GO ---> Connect to server.

It's a pain to set up but once set, it's quicker than rebooting.
