Hi guys and gal

I have got a breakthrough which i though i will share with you guys. Transfer files from your Windows XP will be a no more hassle case. Below are the details:

Test was done on a Sony Vaio PCG-R505TFP with a built in wireless card and a Ti 1Ghz Powerbook with intergrated airport card. Operating system for the Windows is XP and on the Powerbook is Mac OS X ver 10.2.5

1. You need to make sure that the workgroup name for both the Windows based computer/laptop and the Powerbook have the same workgroup name. For Windows XP, go to Control Panel--->System------>Computer Name. There you will see the Workgroup name of the Windows based PC/Laptop.

For Mac OS X ver 10.2.5, Go to Mac HD------->Applications------->Utillities----->Directory Access. On the services tab, click the lock to make changes. Then double click on SMB. There you can see whether you are having the same workgroup name as the Windows based PC/ Laptop.

2. Download WS_FTP from http://www.download.com . Install it in your Windows XP based PC/Laptop. For your Mac OS X Powerbook, go to System Prefernces------->Sharing. On the Services tab, Make sure the Windows File Sharing and FTP Access has a tick on the boxes.

3. Turn off all firewall programs on both the Windows based PC/Laptop and the Powerbook. On the Windows based PC/Laptop, shared a folder that you desire.

4. Make sure you can ping each other to make sure that both machines can communicate with each other.

5. Using WS_FTP, Create a new Profile name eg. Powerbook . Host name/Address will be the IP address of your Powerbook eg. 192.168.1.200. For Host type, leave it as automatic. Enter your user id and password that u created on the powerbook under system preferences--->accounts.

Thats all and you are set !

Enjoy and hopefully this will help you guys in transferring files from your Windows based PC/Laptop to you beloved Apple Powerbook.

Cheers.

Haz

Hi guys,

just wanted to add something to this article.

First I found it very helpful to hear how you can change the workgroup in OSX, didn't know that.

Second, you don't need to install a ftp-program on any of the machines as both XP and OSX have a ftp-client integrated in the OS.

To connect to your PC from your mac, just use the "Apple-K" command in "the finder" or by menu: "Go to"------"Connect to server"
Then just enter the IP of the PC and click connect. You'll then be asked to identify, if you haven't changed any settings in XP just click on OK and you will have the choice of all shared folders.

To connect to your mac from your PC, open the Windows Explorer and press F3 that will open the search field. Choose look for computer in network and type the IP address of your mac. you will get an computer icon with the IP address beside it. Just doubleclick on that icon and identify as a user or use the guest account, but be sure to acticate it first in the Accounts settings on your mac.

Alternatively the mac should also be shown in the workgroup window in XP once you put the mac into the same workgroup as th PC.

Hope this helps
Mike

PS: I'm using this feature in my home-network, i.e. a Extreme Airport Station, my 700 ibook with airport card and two XP PC with wireless adaptors.

How do you activate a guest account?

I don't see that option in 10.3

thanks.
