Originally I had a Linksys 4 port router hooked up to my cable modem with a
airport base station connected to that. Worked good and had no issues.
Recently the linksys died so I replaced it with a wireless linksys router.
But now my connection is really slow and I keep loosing it, however my
signal strength shows good. I see there is a lot of advanced settings but I
cant find any info on optimizing it.
Any suggestions?

Not to seem snide or anything, but have you checked out the manual tha came with the wireless router? Have you looked at the help available in the configuration web pages for each and every setting? Have you looked at the FAQ on Linksys' web site?
That may sound rude, but if I don't know what you've already done (and what your current settings are), I can't tell where to start.

There is nothing wrong with asking me to RTFM but I have done that. Unfortunately there seems to be little info, even from linksys, on the advanced settings and I haven't seen anything from their site explaining how to recover the issues I have. Not that their site is the easiest to get info from...

I'm always a little hesitant to say "RTFM" because I never know how sensitive people are...
Anyway, you mention that you lose your connection with your wireless router, and it seems slow. Can you say it happens in certain circumstances, or is it consistently slow? Do you lose it only at certain times (like after your computer goes to sleep), or just randomly?
How is your wireless router set up? When you put it into service, did you have the opportunity to copy settings from your old router? And this can make a difference-is your connection cable or DSL?
I have a couple of possible fixes in mind, but I need this information to keep from steering you wrong.

My old set up was a linksys wired router with a airport hooked up. My new setup is a wireless/wired combo linksys. The APBS didnt have most of the settings that the linksys does.

Ok, let's start with simple stuff. If you have the same speed issues with your computer wired to the router as you do wirelessly, then it's obviously not a wireless problem, but instead it's a router problem.
I'm going not very far out on a limb to say that you're probably a DSL customer, and your MTU setting is still at its default of 1500. That's just a little too big, so your packets get fragmented, slowing you down as much as 50%.
Somewhere in the Advanced settings (it's at the bottom on the Filters tab of my non-wireless BEFSR41's setup) you'll find a setting for MTU. For DSL customers, it should be enabled and set to 1492. (This is because of the PPPoE authentication almost all DSL providers use; it has an extra 8 bytes of overhead, so the default is 8 bytes too big.)
See if this addresses your speed problem, then we'll talk about the connection loss problem.

Oooo. That makes things harder. Cable works great with an MTU of 1500-and since your wired performance is fine that adds up to a wireless problem. Ouch.
What are your wireless settings in the router? Channel, Infrastructure/Ad Hoc, WEP, default wireless data rate, and so on are important. It may also be that your AirPort card got confused and reverted to a lower data rate itself, so your Admin Utility settings are important too.

Found this recent thread after doing a search and thought I would pursue...
So, did you find a fix for the problem? I was just at my uncle's and he has a Linksys wireless router hooked up to his roadrunner cable connection and it seemed WAY slow to me. I haven't had time to dive in to the details yet, but the problem described here sounds like the one I am having.
One observation, though...file transfers between 2 PB over his wireless network were also DOG slow so I suspect that something is screwed up with the router configuration.
All suggestions welcome. I'll post back when/if I find the problem.

Just a follow up for the record in case somebody searches for this in the future:
I fixed the problem with slow wireless performance with the Linksys router attached to a cable modem. The Linksys was configured improperly by the "expert" that my uncle had set it up.
I was able to increase speed across the board by about 20x by adjusting one setting in the configuration page (accessible by a browser at a preset ip address..RTM). Unfortunately I don't have the page in front of me right now, but there are two pull down menus that dictate the speed of communication. One of these was set at 1-5 Mb/s (or some such low value) instead of 5-10 Mb/s (or some such higher value...there were only two options). Changing both of these to the higher setting fixed the problem.
At bandwidthplace.com, performance went from 100 kb/s to 2.0 Mb/s!!!

That would be the wireless network data speeds. Linksys equipment should default to the automatic, 'highest available' setting, but it's obviously not something to take for granted.
Note that with higher data rates selected, you may see some interesting phenomena. For example, when your signal quality starts to go down, you may see somewhat slower performance (or not, depending on what you're transfering). You may also notice that your computer's signal quality is more dependent on how close to the access point you are.

I had tried the same thing. it did improve perfomace but the linksys will still reset or something. I will completely loose it, will dissappear from the signal indicator in the menu bar.
