I currently have a G4 dual 500 mhz (OSX), an imac 333mhz (OS 9.04) and have an ibook G3 800 mhz and airport extreme base arriving tomorrow. I originally purchased the airport extreme base w/o antenna connection for future use with a new PB 12 or 17. I'm currently networking with a Netgear fast ethernet and have Charter internet.

I want to go wireless where possible. I already have second thoughts about AE w/o the antenna connection and am tempted to return it unopened for one with the antenna connection for longer range. But while I'm second guessing myself, would it be better to buy a third party system that makes wireless g cards for notebooks and pci desktops such as Linksys?

I puchased an Apple Wireless Extreme Base Station when I bought my 12" Powerbook. I couldn't be more pleased. The range is very good, both my mac and my 2 pc's work with the Airport. One of the pc's is connected via an ethernet cable to the base station and the other pc is using a USB wireless external box/card from Compaq. The 12" Powerbook has a Airport Extreme card in it.

My range improved with the latest software upgrade to 10.2.5 so I am very pleased. The Airport Extreme Base Station is the one with the WAN Port, LAN Port, Antenna Port and a modem. (I connect via Dial-up since I live in a very small town in Texas!)
