Hey folks, have a bit of a problem I haven't been able to figure out with my iBook Dual USB 700 with Airport Card. I noticed today that I wasn't able to get on to any of the various wireless networks around my campus that are set up. These networks do not have WEP enabled, as they are intended as "hotspots" for student access. In the Airport Menu Extra, the networks would be detected and selected and I was getting a full, strong signal, but I wasn't able to navigate anywhere on the internet. Checked Network Prefs and saw the dreaded 169.x.x.x self-assigned address on the Airport Card, (It is set to get its configuration via DHCP.). Tried to release and renew the IP, but I still wasn't managing to get an IP from the DHCP server. Assuming it was something with the DHCP server on the network I was currently on, I went to another open wireless access area on campus (different network), and suffered the same fate.. could see and get on the network with no problem, but no-go on DHCP. I tried a few reboots, to no avail. iBook is running 10.2.5.

Any guesses? I'm stumped...

When is the last time you restarted your computer? Even Macs have a glitch or two after running for a long time, and DHCP is one place that everybody has problems. Try turning your computer off completely and leaving it off for a few minutes. Then restart it, preferably in one of your campus hot spots, and see if you can obtain an IP then.

I agree with GHPorter in so far as a reboot. I've noticed odd DHCP lease problems when waking up from sleep personally, but these are with authenticated APs. If you arp -a from Terminal.app do you see the wireless AP in the ARP table? You should, if you can associate with it
