Hey all, I have just Had my imac (jag 10.2.3) for a month and i am attempting to network it with my WINDOWS 2000 PC, although it is failing quite miserably.
I have them connected to each other via ethenet, and i was just wondering what now?
For the first time since i have had my mac i have found that the apple help is useless with connecting a network, forgive me if i sound stupid, but could any one please help me out hear. i.e.. What to do?

Which revision iMac is it?
You might need to use a crossover cable instead of a patch cable.
Can the machines ping each other? Is Windows file sharing set up on the G4 right, with the right client settings on the Win2K box?
Are both machines on the same subnet?
I need more info...

Okay, the iMac will autosense, so you don't need a crossover. That's one down.
Now, if it failed to ping, then the whole "is file sharing set up properly" doesn't matter quite yet.
Do either machine run a firewall? If so, turn them off, now try pinging. No good?
Open the network properties on the PC. Tell me the first 3 numbers of its IP address, and tell me what the "Subnet Mask" says.
Now open the network preferences on the Mac, and tell me the same details.

No firewall, no ping
Open the network properties on the PC. Tell me the first 3 numbers of its IP address, and tell me what the "Subnet Mask" says.
Ip Address (first 3 numb) 169.
Subnet mask 255
Now open the network preferences on the Mac, and tell me the same details.
IP add (first 3 numb) 192
Subnetmask 255
cheers

Sorry, I needed the full subnet mask. I just didn't want you to post a full IP address incase it was your external one.
Can I have the full subnet masks of EACH machine, and full IP address? Most importantly, are the two 'subnet masks' the same, or different numbers?
Is the PC IP address something like 169.254. whatever?
If so, that's the IP address often delegated to a system by a cable modem when there is no network... or it could simply be the scheme used to network your machines internally.
ANYway, if you don't mind losing your old settings (I suggest you write them down, or make a new profile, or something similar), change the settings to this:
Subnet mask on each machine: 255.255.255.128
IP address on PC: 10.0.0.1
IP address on Mac: 10.0.0.2
Gateway, et al, don't really concern yourself with. Just fill them in with similar numbers. 10.0.0.1 or whatever won't hurt in gateway/router.
Do they see each other now?

Ethernet adapter LAN Config IP address's
PC - 169.254.179.38
imac - 169.254.32.82
Is the PC IP address something like 169.254. whatever?
yup.
