Well its not really software base station.
Im running jaguar and wanting to share my wired (usb) isdn connection to my imac with my ibook without a base station.
Both the imac and ibook have standard, working airport cards.
I have set up sharing internet via airport in the system networking preferences, and the share icon appears in the top bar of the macosx screen on the imac. The ibook can actually see and authenticate to the imacs internet connection share, and appears to be connected, but at the bottom of the airport internet connect screen the status says " status unknown" or similar, rather than connected or not connected.
What do you think is going wrong? Corrupt airport software? My software firewall? How can i troubleshoot this?
Ive been to the apple support site and cant find anything specifically useful.
My base station is playing up but lets not even go there right now

I used to do the Software Base station thing with my previous setup of a Power Mac and wireless iBook.
Here is how I set it up:
Both Mac have airport cards installed.
Whichever Mac is physically connected to the internet, select Sharing Preferences.
Under the Firewall tab, verify whether or not you have the Firewall on. If you do, then check to see if Personal Web Sharing is checked. If it is not, then make sure it is. This is not necessary if your Firewall is off.
Under the Internet tab, Start Internet Sharing.
Switch to the Network Preferences and show Airport. Select the Airport tab. Check "Allow this Computer to create Networks". A window will appear asking you to name your new network and a password if you want. Make your choices. Select Apply Now in the Network window when you are done.
In the Menu bar, the airport icon should change to the what looks like a little arrow pointing up.
The wireless Mac now only needs to look for this new network. It should appear in the Airport menu bar list.
Hope this works! Let us know!

OK, when I do this (turn on SBS on my computer physically connected to ethernet) I can no longer access my mail through Entourage (OK, in classic). However, my internet connection is unaffected.
Any ideas?
