Hi

At home I have a graphite ABS connected to DSL. With my 15" PB and an iMac I consistently get the same upload and download speeds. Tonight my wife bought a 12" PB with Airport extreme. It connects but the speed to the internet is horrible. If I
plug her machine into my PB with ethernet and share my wireless connection all is fine. I also tried pluggin the DSL modem into my mac and making my PB a software base station. That didn't work so well.

Has anyone had this problem ? I don't mind buying the extreme base station but I am worried that I will get the reverse problem - my 15" PB and the iMac will have trouble connecting to the extreme. Any thoughts on that ?

I thought as a final last resort (other than a large reel of ethernet cable!) I could put a USB blue tooth adapter into the iMac so my final question is: How well do Bluetooth and Airport mix ?

Any thoughts gratefully recieved this is a real pain!

Michael

PS. I ran the Airport 3.01 update on both machines.

I found a posting over at the Apple discussions where somebody said that an Apple tech told them to set the graphite ABS to channel 11 and all would be well. I have done that and all does seem well.

Why ????

Channel 11 is a specific frequency-the highest available in the US and Canada. It could be that the Extreme cards work in "B" mode best on that channel, or that they have trouble maintaining an 11MBps connection on the other channels. I have no idea what the "G" channels are-anyone want to chime in with some numbers on this?-but they can't be the same frequencies as the "B" channels.

After running on Channel 11 for a night it certainly seems that speed is fine but it is a little `fragile'. The connection on the PB 12 seems to just drop unexpectedly every hour or so. There are lots of posts on Apple's discussion boards about this kind of thing. Seems that the higher speed of the airport extreme may have been bought at a loss of robustness.
