My friends would like to have broadband internet access for their iMac and I have said I will help them as they have no technical knowledge.
I already have broadband but mine is provided by NTL, but they are not able to use this as it is not in thier area. They are limited to use the BT Broadband service.
Here are the requirements :-
They have an iMac FP 800 Superdrive
They are using OS X 10.2.5
They would like 500mps Internet Access for home use only
I am capable of doing the intallation, so a self-install is OK
My questions are :-
What is the correct Broadband Modem to buy, USB or Ethernet?
If it is an Ethernet modem will I need to install software, and will it work with the BT service?
How easy is it to configure?
Basically I would like to hear from someone who has successfully connected to BT Broadband via an Ethernet modem in OS X
I hope you can help

Buy an ethernet broadband router, there are plenty to choose from at dslsource and BroadbandBuyer (and undoubtedly others). That way, you can just plug it in and go - I can highly recommend my SpeedTouch 510v4 (if you only need one computer, you could probably use the newer 530 which only has 1 ethernet jack), had absolutely no problems with it whatsoever. Most do DHCP so you don't have to manually input all your details in the networking pane of System Preferences. Since it's just a standard ethernet router, you don't need any software at all.
If you get a USB modem, you're opening yourself up to a whole range of driver conflict issues (and there's only about 1 which supports OS X anyway).
DO NOT GET BT OR BT OPENWORLD!!! Get someone like Plus.Net -- they're cheaper and better.

My broadband is Nildram, they are incredible! £22.99 a month and their service is wonderful. My dad is on BT Openworld and the service sucks but we both connect at the same speed. Its just more expensive
