I have just obtained the Cisco VPN Client 4.0 through work after abusing my authority. (They don't want to support Mac's).
Thinking that this would be straight forward I merrily installed it and tried to connect. I know that I have the connection settings correct but as soon as I try to connect I get the message.
Secure VPN Connection terminated locally by the Client
Reason: A required component PPPTool.exe is not present among the installed client software.
The software then loops in a
Initiating remote access connection to your ISP, please wait...
This goes on forever.
As I am unlikely to get any help at the office am turning to some kind soul on this forum to try and help me out. Really want to be able to connect and show them that the Mac is just as good as the 14,000+ PC's at work.
Thanks in advance.

PPPTool.exe?? That doesn't sound like anything the Mac would utilize.
I've had success in the past with the 3.7 version of the Cisco VPN client. I've since reinstalled and am now working on configuring the 3.5 client as that's the 'tested' version they want me to use now.
I would either try to get an older, more stable release of the client of use Google to research the 4.0 client. I just looked around though and the majority of the information on the web is about the 3.7 client. There are Cisco docs for the 3.5 and 3.7 client but I couldn't find a 4.0 docs page.
Good luck.

Yeah I suspect it is a message that wasn't ported over from their windoze version. In any case, it seems as if the installer is misisng something and wondered if others had experience on this.
I have read stuff here before on people using the 4.0 client. Was hoping one of them would come to my rescue....

Hi,
I'm pulling down the 4.0 client from CCO now to check it out (didn't know it was released). I assume you had a previous version that worked. What kind of settings do you have, what kind of authentication scheme is used at your company (SecurID, digital certs...), what kind of concentrator is used at your company (IOS crypto enabled router, PIX firewall, 3000 series VPN concentrator....)? I'll let you know if i run into issues using it. Been using 3.7.2 up until now.

Thanks kampl. Actually, I only just recently decided to try and use the Cisco client as I got sick of lugging home my crappy Dell laptop. Did a quick scan on here and found there was a 4.0 client so got that.
Work gave me a pcf file so I just imported that. We use SecuriID so have a token. Don't know the concentrator but can find that out.
Let me know how you go with the install. As soon as I run it I get the PPPTools.exe message.

So you generally use SecurID I assume to authenticate? Like if you highlight the connection, click Modify, and choose the authentication tab you see Group Authentication radio button marked and a name password and confirm password entries as opposed to Certificate Authentication right?
Having a spot of trouble here at the moment with this client as my 3k concentrator setup is still beta unlike the end of lifed 5ks we've been using. May have tweaked settings on the concentrator that I've forgotten about.
On the plus side I have not gotten any PPPtools.exe errors with what I have acquired. Maybe you pulled the wrong file mistakenly. Should be vpnclient-darwin-4.0.Rel-GUI-k9.dmg.

Trap for young players. When I imported the pcf file from work, it obviously takes in a few other PC specific settings that can't be seen or changed in the Mac version. Hence my error. When I deleted the configuration and manually keyed it in again it worked perfectly!
Thanks for your assistance though.
