Have a 800mhz iMac. Getting a 800mhz iBook for the wife. Am planning on gettting an Airport card for the iBook and adding one to the iMac. Wanting to set up a software base station using the iMac until I can come up with the money for an ABS. iMac running 10.2.4 and assume that the iBook will come with .5

Dumb questions to follow:

Does SBS only work with the iMac up, running and connected to my ISP or would the iBook be able to connect to my ISP with the iMac just up and running but not connected?

What would the range of this setup be generally speaking?

Should I get the older b or the newer g basestation? Have heard of problems connecting the older cards with the newer stations.

The host machine (iMac) needs to be up. running and awake for clients to get a connection. For this and many other reasons, I suggest you just get a wireless router. For less than the price of the second Airport card, you could get the Netgear MR814 from buy.com. You would then connect the iMac to it with an ethernet cable and the iBook with the Airport card. This is very simple and far better than SBS.
