Saw IP over Firewire came out today from Apple. Can someone explain the implications of this? What are any advantages/disadvantages over traditional networking methods? Thanks.

for example, you can share your dsl/cable internet connection with another mac via firewire instead of having to buy a hardware router or a mac-compatible network card. also, if you have a pre-2001ish mac, IP over firewire (400 Mbit/sec) is theoretically faster than IP over 100-baseT ethernet (100 Mbit/sec) (computers newer than this have 1000 Mbit/sec networking over ethernet).
i see this is another release for developers. this is preview release 1.1. according to apple, the update provides "significant performance improvements and other minor fixes" and is the same software that's included with OSX Server 10.2.5.
edit: here's the URL:
http://developer.apple.com/firewire/..._FireWire.html
you have to be a developer to log in and download it.

has anyone seen any details about what specifically is changed? i downloaded the release notes from the ADC but they seem to contain no new information. i had serious problems with the first preview; i'm not going to install this until i get my copy of diskwarrior 3.

finally got around to installing and testing it out. sharing internet connection over FW no longer causes several minute delay during boot. mounting a disk image on two computers simultaneously no longer causes a kernel panic.

spambot - does your internet sharing work right over firewire? i've tried it on a B&W G3, my 12" powerbook and a friend's quicksilver and the dhcp server over firewire wouldn't assign an address to the client in any case, so i had to set stuff manually.
