Is it possible for a Mac running 10.2.6 to share the entire harddrive across a LAN with PC?

Thanks.

You mean the harddrive on which the system is installed, I presume. Let me strongly recommend against that. First of all, you're going to run into permissions issues with your system folders and even if you don't, you'll be opening yourself up for the possibility of someone accidently hosing your system files. Therefore, I suggest you specify exactly what you'd like to share and then we can give you more details on how you should do it.

In general, it consists of setting up a Samba share by using either SWAT (point your browser to http://localhost:901 to configure it) or SharePoints (look in versiontracker for details). You can also do it manually by editing your smbd.conf file in the /etc directory.

Thanks H for the assist. Actually, I have been asked to find out if it's possible to share a mounted external firewire drive attached to a Mac running OS X with PCs on a network.

Now, is that possible?

You could proceed one of two ways. The easiest is probably just to download SharePoints (from www.versiontracker.com). Now, once you've done that, go to System Preferences/Sharing and start 'Windows File Sharing' under the 'Services' tab.

Open up SharePoints and under the 'Normal Shares' tab, click 'create new share', point the 'directory' to your FireWire drive and give the share a name. Make sure the permissions are set to r/w for 'Owner', 'Group' and 'Everyone'. If everything went ok, you should be able to access the drive by typing in your ip in windows as follows:

\\192.168.123.6\Sharename

assuming the first number is the target ip address and that 'Sharename' is the share's name.

If that doesn't work, then you have to make a new user and/or make a couple of changes in your smbd.conf file. Try this first and then report back...

Hozie, thanks alot. Your suggestion worked. I also took a look at the smb.conf file after SharePoints did its job and it shows that the application created 2 entries.

Thanks again,
