OK forget my other thread that just critisizes. I'm sick of everyone I ask for help telling me that "my linksys stuff works great". I did very little configureing to this router. I plugged in all my computers. I turned off wireless cause I don't need it yet. I set each computer to grab an I manually, which worked fine. Every computer got online. Problem is for some reason I coudln't recieve or check my email on my server. I set the server to be the DMZ host so it is essentially right on the internet the way it was before this router (and the way it is right now). Also this is the second router, the first one was really a dud and I send it back and got a new one. I'm about to send this one back too. Web works fine, but I can't access email. My passwords are rejected to check, and people that send me email get it returned talking about a "routing cycle". I don't know what that means but soon as I took out the router everything was fine again. Also my AIM connection would time out ever few minutes. Many many message were lost becuase it doesn't realize its no longer on for a while, so you're just tlaking and no one is there to listen. I also forwarded a few ports to my G4 but thats really all I did to configure this router. oh I also changed its IP from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.0.1, which is what my old router used to be. Its really a simple set up I have, a very basic configureation, and I can't figure out for the life of my why I'm having all these problems and no one else is. These routers are going for $76 on Amazon.com, brand new. Has anyone else bought one? Is anyone else having problem after problem with them? I can see me getting one bad one, but two? I must not be the only one.

I've used one to create a subnet that routes for both PCs, Macs, and wireless. It has been bullet proof.
Do you have your firewall in OS X turned on?
Did you re-map your paorts after changing the subnet?
If you turned off the wireless interface- are you sure you are configuring the right MAC address? Why not use DHCP?

Nope no firewall. No ports are mapps, as I'm using the DMZ host for my server. What do you mean configureing the right MAC address?? I have DHCP running but my computer that never change, i have them grab static IPs so I can port map and connect one another without having to check what thier current IP is first.
Linksys tech support just told me that for some people it works and for some it doesn't, and that i can try another brand of router if i want to! Unbelievable!

Wow- nice comment from tech?!?!.
When you open the config page for the linksys, it should show a MAC address for the physical J45 ports and a separate one for the wireless.
POP e-mail?
Perhaps routing tables are scrambled and when an email packet arrives, the destination is not clear. Is there a way to reset the router (not in front of the one I work with)?
Hmmm. I'll noddle a bit a see what if anything I can suggest.

Both incoming SMTP emails and POP when I try to check it, both get denied one way or another.

And what amazes me is that, with all the tech people I've talked to, not one has asked me a single question about my configuration, which options i have set up, what I have it set to do etc.

I have an e-mail server on my Linksys, you have to open the ports for POP and SMTP, ADvanced>Fowarding>in the Ext.Port field fill out 25 to 25 check TCP and the IP address of the server machine then check the Enable checkbox and hit Apply. Same for port 110. and you should be good to go.

Try the Upnp button and do the same thing and try it useing the UDP setting, also try the DHCP tab and set the router as Enabled under DHCP Server if it still doesnt work check the disable DHCP Server.

I've actually given up. I'm just goona stick to using my Switch and server as a router, and im going to keep this thing just as a WAP, since it costs the same amount as the linksys WAP with no router built in, I might as well just keep it. But Thanks anyway though.

No link sys was the only router/wap that was under $100, way way under... Ill just stick with my old software router that has always been totally reliable, and use the linksys just for wireless.

I saw that same one somehwere else, but I thought it said it was refurbished. I'm hesitant to get one of those, becuase two linksys's back to back wouldn't work, I woudln't look forward to going through all the hassle of trying to see if THIS one would work.

Can you manually set the MAC address on the Netgear like you can on the Linksys? That will save me 6 to 12 hours of work if my cable modem doesn't realize something new is connected.

Yes, it does support MAC address cloning. Just the tech's comment would be enough for me to switch brands. Who needs that kind of frustration?
