Arrgh. I've been using X almost exclusively since beta, and now I totally forgot how to network system 7.

Needed: to connect to/from G4 osX with Powerbook 520c (blackbird) system 7.5.5 via ethernet hub.

there is an airport hub involved which creates and distributes ips. Also throw in a cable modem, and I'm totally lost.

Also connected to the hub is Beige G3 running os9 which I can connect to fine. An ice ibook running X is connected thru airport.

this is getting confusing. I don't even know where to start.

any help appreciated. thanks

Depending on what bandwidth you need, how about using Appletalk?

The powerbook is connected to the hub with an appletalk to ethernet connector. But the appletalk control panel won't let me switch from modem to ethernet. error box asks to check my network connections.

Or are you talking about a direct connection to the G4? I'd really prefer not to go that route, that's what we got the hub for.

I really think the problem is me not knowing what to fill in all the control panels...
sharing
tcp/ip
appletalk
users and groups
maybe others?

I was able to connect this a while back pre-jag. One issue is a dead PRAM battery on the laptop. So some of the setting don't survive a shutdown/restart.

I don't think 7.5.5 supports AFP or apple file sharing over TCP/IP, so you're going to have to use AppleTalk. Usually if the PowerBook says it can't switch ports it means something isn't connected right. I remember with my 540c I had to have the ethernet transciever and cable connected or it wouldn't let me change networking ports. You should be able to switch teh PowerBook to ethernet, enable AppleTalk on your OS X box, enable file sharing on the book and it should be good to go thru the connect menu on the OS X machine. TCP/IP shouldn't be necessary for just sharing files.

I'm trying to remember- there was/is another step in getting the modem to turn loose of the port. I believe in Apple Remote Access you need to turn off or disable the modem. That, in turn, will let the port be available for Ethernet in your Control Panel.

Didn't we use MacTCP/IP to configure TCP/IP on 7.5.5 or was that 7.6? Used a slider bar to set the subnet range...... The System is capable, juist how to access the right places to configure it.

It was either MacTCP or Open Transport, can't remember which 7.5.5 came with.

I don't know if it matters but there is no modem on this laptop.

Somewhere in Apple's knowledge base archives is info on this. I'd try searching there using System 7.5 as a key word. I've tossed all my documentation from that era (sheesh....now it'll be worth a fortune).

Maybe I'm missing something, but why not upgrade to 8 or even 9.2

This old powerbook only goes to 7.5.5
I still love the little beast though.

I'll definitely try the apple kb, though.

I know it works. Might have to reinstall the system just to purge all the settings, and start with defaults...

7.5 has both Open Transport AND Classic Networking available. Open Transport is more robust, though, and easier to configure. There's a network selector utility in the Apple Extras folder to choose the networking you want to use.

However, it's true... you can't connect to an AFP over TCP/IP server from System 7. (8.6 was the earliest to do it out of the box, although by upgrading the AppleShare Client, you can do it on earlier versions of Mac OS 8.)

You'll have to use ethernet or LocalTalk (with a LocalTalk-to-ethernet adapter) using AppleTalk if you want to use AFP.

Alternatively, you can use TCP/IP and FTP, although I would recommend stuffing files before transmitting them this way.
