Can't access my email when using router!

I just purchased a Barricade™ Turbo 11/22Mbps Auto-Sensing Wireless Cable/DSL Broadband Router, model SMC2404WBR.
When I installed it, my Airport card detected the base station with no problem and good signal.
The problem I have is this: When using the router, I can't access my email folders in Yahoo, and I can't send messages from another email account I have. I tried Safari and Internet Explorer with same results. If I remove the router and connect the Mac direct to the DSL modem, everything works fine.
I don't know what settings in the router are causing these problems and I don't know how to change them.
I almost forgot: I also have a PC connected to the router (via ethernet cable) with the very same problem.
I guess I have to configure the router somehow, right?
Any help? I'm so frustrated!!!!

I'm not familiar with the brand name, but it sounds like there is a firewall included in the router that is blocking e-mail ports. There should be some documentation included with the box or a refernce to on-line documentation that can help you with this. Take a look on their website under support.
It is easy to modify the firewall to do as you wish. Some routers are shipped with all but the web access port (80) closed and then leave it to the individual to set it up.

The brand name is SMC, and there is nothing in the documentation I could use.
I visited the website and haven't found anything yet.

I just looked on the website and there is the info you want. From memory, clicked on At Home, then the pic of the router, then Support for this product. There is also a link at the bottom of that page labeled Manual.
Click here or here.
Under Support there is loads of info.

I've been dealing with that info for a while without results. I contacted SMC technical support and that's what they suggested:
Login to the Advanced Setup->WAN->PPPoEthernet-> set the Max. transmission unit to the least value allowed (1440)
But the problem is that as soon as I do that, I lose the Internet connection. I have to restore to the factory settings to reconnect.
I don't know about networks and I NEED HELP

Before you do anything else, reset the MTU to 1492-the most common, most effective setting for DSL. This should keep your connection intact, and probably speed things up a little.
Next, try that setting out. See if this just happens to work for you; it's possible!
Now, assuming it's something more complex than an MTU sensitive connection, it sounds like we'll need more information. When you "can't access" things like your Yahoo! mail folders, do you get an error (from either Yahoo! or your browser, or your computer), or does the browser just not do anything?
One thing that sells a lot of SMC routers is their sales pitch about security. They tend to lock everything down, leaving only a few ports open, if any at all. You may need to get into the port filtering section of the setup and open everything up, then experiment with closing ports until you find things stop working. Closed ports could keep various web events from working, especially scripted events.

The browser just doesn't do anything, or tries to reach the page, takes forever and then says that can't find the page. I've been in contact with their customer support by email (without the router, of course) and they recommended to change the MTU (to 1440, it comes with 1492 by default ), but once I go to the router setup and type in my user name and password of my DSL account to change the MTU, it disconnects the Internet access.
To change the MTU it asks user name, password and service name. The last one I always leave blank. Could that be the reason? Because I don't know what the service name is.
Then, if I reset the router to factory settings, it connects again.
They also recommended to open 2 ports (443 and 800), the following way:
Trigger Port Trigger Type Public Port Public Type Enabled
1. 443 TCP 1-65535 TCP Y
2. 800 TCP 1-65535 TCP Y
I tried this without changing the MTU, but nothing happened.
At this point, I'm considering the possibility of returning it.

That could have something to do with it. Also, their service may be looking for "username@isp.com" instead of just "username." What service are you using?

I'm using DSL provided by BellSouth. I just tried "username@bellsouth.net" with no results.

I am having the EXACT same problem right now with BellSouth's FastAccess DSL service. Everything works fine if I connect one machine directly to the DSL box, but once I attach the router (mine's a Macsense Xsense MIH-130 XRouter Pro) I can't get any of my three machines to send emails, submit forms, or even run software update - I get timeout messages. Have you found a solution for this yet?

You have disabled the PPPoE connection software in OS X, right? You aren't running EnterNet or MacPOET, or anything else, right? It just struck me that this could be your real problem. You ARE NOT connecting to the Internet with your computer, you ARE connecting to a NETWORK. Your computer needs to know that-and not try to use the PPPoE connection.
Go to the Admin Utility and click on the Internet tab. On the Connect pop up menu, select something other than "PPP over Ethernet," probably just select ethernet(I haven't had to do this, so I'm guessing right here). You'll want to uncheck the "Automatically Connect" check box, too.
Let me know if this works-it's the most logical thing that may cause it.

I think I've solved the problem - it had to do w/ the MTUs.
I entered the following in the Terminal:
sudo ifconfig en1 mtu 1400
Note that this setting is reset to the default 1500 once you reboot the computer. So, I happened to find this handly little page on Apple's support site describing how to set the MTU's at startup automatically:

 Well, after spending a little more time on it, I've realized that the fix I mentioned above only works about 70% of the time. The other 30% I still get the same errors (mail won't send, can't check yahoo mail, etc.) - should I try to lower the MTU's to an even lower number?
Typically, for my yahoo mail, if it doesn't seem to work the first time around, I stop the browser, then click on the link again. It usually does work the second time around. The same thing just happened when I tried to submit this reply. It didn't go through the first time, but then when I clicked the 'Submit reply' button a second time, it went through. Anyone know why this is?
*EDIT: I realized that I didn't uncomment out the appropriate parts in apple's fix for the problem. It works great now!  *
