Yes, it can be done. The problem is most likely the password protection (if I'm thinking of the same thing you are). An AirPort base's "password" is the WEP key it uses. Apple decided to make it very friendly and easy to use. Everybody else decided to use hexadecimal data to make it more secure. When you enter the same characters in your friend's PC, they're interpreted as hex, not simply text, and that means the PC is using a different key than the base station.

With my wireless network, I generated a hex key and entered it in everything manually. With most Admin Utility versions, you simply start the entry with a "$" (without the quotes, of course), and the input is interpreted as hex. If the hex characters are entered correctly, everything should work fine.

My usual method for generating a hex key is to go to a web site that generates random numbers-there are a huge number of them-and get either 15 or so decimal digits, or 12 hex digits. If I get decimal digits, I use a little app I wrote in college to convert decimal to hex. Your friend can use the calculator app that came with Windows to convert decimal to hex, as well.

Yes, if you turn the password off, and make sure WEP is turned off in the client(s), you should be able to connect and surf. I advise that once you do establish a connection you go to the trouble of protecting your network as soon as you have a few minutes; it would be very bad if some bad guy decided to use your Internet connection to do bad things, no?
