I'm going to be getting a new iMac an a couple of months, but I grabbed a D-Link 604 router now because I happened to see it on sale for less than half price. Never set up a network before (it'll be with my current 333) so I was a bit surprised that the documentation and setup wizard stuff is all PC based with hardly a mention of a Mac.

I know it'll work with my Mac, but can I use the browser-based setup wizard to configure my macs, or do I have to manually set it up somewhere else?

Like I said...it's a couple of months away, but I figured I'd start finding out this stuff now, since I've got the time.

I've set up a D-Link router 614+ through Safari on a mac, which I believe has the same web setup. (the 614+ just includes a wireless access point in addition to the ethernet router).

Cool.

So I can just follow the instructions. I like that. (Of course, some sort of auto-sensing-self-configuring-plug-and-play system would be even better...but I guess I can live with this.)

Thanks

Bruce,

Right now Microsoft and the PC community are playing with something called "Universal Plug and Play," a networking plug and play concept. Note the word "concept." It's more "plug and pray" than internal hardware, and (surprise!) there are hackers who have found weaknesses in some implementations and have exploited them to compromise many networks. Be patient, and Apple will come up with something that a) works like it's supposed to, b) is fairly secure, unless you don't want it to be, and c)isn't too horribly expensive.

On the other hand, since the small/home network industry finally figured out that it's easier to do things with a browser than with some wierd, platform specific application, Mac users can buy just about any network product and save a lot of money! ("Mac compatibility" used to double the price of some products-yuck!)

I've just bought a DI-604 and I'm sure that the docs cover OS X as well as Windows. Certainly the larger manual I downloaded. (Mine is the Euro version though and there seem to be some differences)

You can certatinly use Safari to set up the router and it's all very straight forward as there is a 'wizard'.

Thanks all.

Now I'm pumped and am dying to set the damn thing up. I'm thinking I'll try it with a "network" of one computer to see how it goes, then just add the new one when I get it.

However...I'm gonna have to wait to do even that for a bit as my wife's a teacher and has just started her report cards. She's vowed to castrate me if I do anything to screw up the computer before she finishes.

However...as soon as she's finished, I'm on it.

Again...thanks
