I purchased AT&T Broadband Internet service through Comcast's cable service and configured my network settings with their installation CD, but it seems to have done a few redundant things to my system that I'm trying to cleanup. First, in System Preferences => Location, it added a new entry which uses the Built-in Ethernet port to get DHCP settings from the router. Second, it seems to have added the same function in System Preferences => Location but this time in => Automatic, by adding a new port called Broadband; that is get DHCP settings from my router.

First, can I safely delete one of these entries?
And does it matter which one?

Second, the installation CD seems to have disabled the Built-in Ethernet under System Preferences => Location => Automatic, that is, it no longer gets DHCP settings from the router. Is there a way to get back that functionality? And if so, can I safely delete both of the configurations that the installatIon CD added and still get through to the Cable modem?

Third, what does their installation CD actually do the system?

It did the same thing to mine. I would have scrapped the whole thing if the install guy didn't insist I do it while he was there.

From what I can tell, the "install" CD just changes your settings. It renamed my "Built-in Ethernet" to "Broadband", which I promptly changed back. (Choose "Network Port Configurations" from the "Show" pulldown and then double-click on the port name you want to change). In reality this does nothing, its just cosmetic. Its a standard automatic DHCP connection.

The other thing it does is change your email settings to access the Comcast account. This is OK, except that the account is my roommates and I have my own mail account. So, I had to delete this account.

The install CD is also supposed to contact Comcast and activate your MAC address, but it didn't work on my PB so the install guy had to call in because he didn't know anything about Macs (surprise!).

Other than that, I don't think it did a whole lot. Long story short - you can change everything back to how you want it and still use the internet. It just changes settings for people who are scared by computers.
