Hi all,
I jus got a Linksys WRT54G and I have no idea if my 17" PB is working with it under 'b' or 'g'. Is there any way to tell? If I put the Linksys in "G-Only" mode, the Mac sees the router, but when I connect to it I get an error. Ideas?

The default is to work at the faster speed unless any client connected to the access point is limited to "B" speeds. If that's the case the whole wireless network shifts to "B" speeds. I don't know of any access points that can handle both speeds at the same time-it may be a hardware limitation.

I haven't delved into the latest version of the AirPort software to see if there's a notice to the user that a "G" card is running at either speed, but I have just poured through the manual for your router, and it doesn't look like there's any indication there at all.

I could suggest finding a third party program that would provide you this information, but I don't know where to start on that path. Sorry.

Well, I tested it by switching from my b to g and testing transfer speeds from my file server. Oh, yes, I'm DEFINTELY running g . Damn, it's SOOOOOO much faster!

However, switching the Linksys to "G-Only" still gives me an error on the Mac. Odd, don't you think?

Hmmm... I don't know enough about AE or the newer Linksys boxes to have anything productive to say about your situation, but it sure is strange. What specific error are you getting?

Nothing specific. "An error occured when connecting to the selected Airport network" or something similar.

if you open the "Network Utility" in the /Applications/Utilities folder, it will tell you the current speed of any network interface. pick airport, and it should say either 11 Mbps (b) or 54 Mbps (g).

{Slaps self in forehead} Duh! I should have remembered that! Last time I used Network Utility, I wasn't looking for performance stats, so I just didn't recall that they were there. {Slaps self again} I gotta get some more coffee!
