1) define "exceptionally weak"?
Will you get 300 ft out of it? no. but you won't with any other wireless base station/card combo.
No one will be able to predict what signal strength you'll get since there are too many variables, but if your work station is directly above where you intend to put the base station, I wouldn't expect you to have any problem.
2) To be perfectly honest, any of the common brands are going to work approximately equally. I don't have any compelling argument for or against any of the wireless base stations/routers I've used. It's personal preference. All I can say is if you stick with a known brand you're not likely to go wrong.
3) Wireless networking in the home is so common now most, if not all of the kinks have been worked out long ago. Take advantage of other people's pain and go for it.
