What's the advantage of having an airport base station? Couldn't I just get a wireless router for cheaper?

Thanks,

DING! DING! DING! Give the customer a stuffed doll!

Yes, you can buy a number of wireless routers that cost significantly less than an AirPort Base Station. These routers also usually offer multiple ethernet ports, features like MAC Address Cloning, port forwarding (via a graphic interface), and platform independent configuration.

There are advantages to AirPort, if you're a committed Apple fan. The styling always goes with Macs. The management software uses the same terminology as the software for the client-heck, it IS the same software as used with clients. You get to buy the equipment from Apple or an Apple-chosen vendor-for an Apple-chosen price. (Oops! that belonged in the other column!)

Anyway, you should get the picture. You either stick like glue to Apple products, or you shop around and buy what you want, then (this is pretty easy) figure out how to configure it. Not rocket science.

If I would be in the market for a basestation I would choose Airport for the following reasons:

- Modem (great if you want to be wireless in places that dont have ethernet)

- USB port (such an elegant way of sharing a printer, no need to turn on a computer to have access to a shared printer)

- Styling. (It's beautiful )

The bad thing about an AP basestation is that you'll need a hub to connect more machines. Other vendors might also have more features in their products.

Just my .5 pesos.

Depends what equipment you've already got - I already had a switch, and had just bought a 17 AL, so had Airport Extreme already built in.

There were a number macs already here, but a few PCs as well, just seemed more convenient to go with the Apple option. Also I was a little concerned about range, so wanted a base station with optional antenna hole - couldn't find any at the time except for the AEx.
