Help please for an Airport newbie.

I have set up my new Airport extreme base station and my iMac and Powerbook can see it. But when I connect the ethernet cable from my DLink ADSL modem in to the airport WAN slot, neither computer can browse the internet. Is this some re start problem or have I missed something?

I have noticed that when I wish to connect the modem to a different computer, I have to re-configure the settings on the modem. But I can't even get to those settings via the Airport

Thanks in advance.

1. Unplug the modem from the AEBS, but not the phoneline.

2. Re-initialise the AEBS (press the reset button for 5 seconds) and the modem (a little button in between the ports). Wait for a minute until the AEBS has restarted, then plug the ethernet cable from the modem to the WAN port on the AEBS.

3. Turn Airport on on your laptop.

4. Open the AEBS Admin Utility, log-in to AEBS (note that your password will now be 'public' after the hard reset and click the internet connection button on the left. Choose Connect via Ethernet, Configure Manually and set the IP to 192.168.0.2, the subnet mask to 255.255.255.0 and the router to 192.168.0.254. Click update and wait for the AEBS to re-boot.

5. Open Explorer and go to 192.168.0.1 to get at the modem web management page. Under account configurations, choose connection type PPPoA, encapsulation LLC, your username and password (the one you use to connect to your ISP), authentication to CHAP, connect on demand enabled, idle time 0 minutes. Click OK and wait for the modem to reset. Go to the system setting page and set the VPI/VCI boxes to 0/38 respectively and click OK to reset the modem again if you needed to change anything. It was this last detail where I differed from the solution given me by Apple Helpline - they suggested 8/35 and it didn't work, but I don't know why. Quit Explorer.

6. Open Airport Admin Utility, log-in to the AEBS and select the Internet Connection button again. Choose connect via Ethernet as before, but this time configure using DHCP and enter 192.168.0.1 in the DHCP Client ID box at the bottom. Click update, wait for the AEBS to reboot, and that's it! Make sure Airport is the top of the list in the Network system setting and everything else is deselected.

I now need your help....

My AEBS keeps crashing...and I'm quite sure its the router ware that causes it.

Tell me, do you only have a wireless machine, or any wired machines as well?

Maybe a seperate router?

I'm getting a new router and gonna have teh AEBS as a dumb bridge..sort out my issues...

Thanks, Mike

Sorry can't help - I'm only using it as a wireless base station. Anything else too technical at this stage!

I was just thinking, and wanted to let you know that people can access your modem. It has a security bug, and there is a special password to use to get access via telnet. the pass is 'private'. There is no way to change it as well, which is very annoying!

[Itchy:~] mike% telnet 192.168.0.1
Trying 192.168.0.1...
Connected to 192.168.0.1.
Escape character is '^]'.
password:
logged on; type `@close' to close connection.
192.168.0.1> @close
Connection closed by foreign host.

I'm replacing mine for this very reason.

Ohh, the firmware can not be updated as dlink no longer supports it ARGH!
