I just bought the MR814v2 Netgear wireless router and have been trying to get it to work with my 17" Powerbook...

Is there a known problem with the Airport Extreme?

When generating the WEP password I do put a "$" beforehand.

I've gone over and over all my settings, and it cannot be this difficult! Can it?

Any thoughts?

I get the message "Cannot connect to ... network", when entering the password into the Airport Extreme dialogue for connection.

Ok, where are you generating your keys, and where are you inserting the '$'? It makes a difference. If you're letting the Netgear software (or firmware) generate a hex key for you, then you need to copy it, exactly into the key entry window in your AirPort software, preceded by a '$'.

If that's what you're doing already, maybe you should start manually generating a key or two to see what's actually working and what isn't. Try entering "0A 1B 2C 3D 4E 5F 0A 1B 2C 3D 4E 5F 0A" in the Netgear, and "$0A 1B 2C 3D 4E 5F 0A 1B 2C 3D 4E 5F 0A" in the AirPort. That should enter the same key in both, and in hex format specifically in the AirPort software.

Come to think about it, doesn't the latest version of AirPort software have a checkbox or something that explicitly says "this entry is in hex?" I don't know what would happen if you checked that and entered the '$' at the same time...

My problem was I had to upgrade the router's firmware.

Sonnofabit !!!!

I can't friggin believe it.
I slept on it, woke up, and whalla it hit me.
I bought this thing off of the shelf and it was probably sitting there for sometime before they even came out with the PB 17".

Works great now.

Upgraded the firmware through the setup section in the browser.

I had no problems generating the hex key with the $ symbol.

Thanks!

Mark
