Wired Server: G3/500
Linksys Router
AEBS (5.1)- Enet Bridge

iMac: Airport Card 20 feet awat from AEBS

Currently my internet Downloads can be near 300k/sec with a good site, but my file tranfers to/from the G3 ar dog-slow.

i keep all my mp3s on a external firewire hard drive connected to the G3 Server -- if i change 11 tracks to have the album title "the joshua tree" instead of "joshua tree" in iTunes it takes FOREVER.....

i have the upgraded firmware for the AEBS and still i don't see an increase.

BTW: waiting to buy a 17" PB with AE -- that will speed up transfers, but what is going on now with the iMac/"b" transfers -- Any idea?

You probably have mixed subnets there. Check the IPs of each machine. They should all have the same 1st three position groupings (for example: 192.168.123.189 and 192.168.123.190). If they are different, you have two DHCP servers running; one for wired and one for wireless. To correct this, turn off DHCP serving on the AEBS. This feature in Airport lingo is called something like "Share one IP" or something with a checkbox. Uncheck it.
As an explanation, when you have different subnets going, your computers are not on a coherent LAN. This forces file transfers and such to go across the internet instead of directly from computer to computer.

thanks for your response...

i definately have them in the same subnet (92.168.123.100 and 192.168.123.101)

And i manually gave the airport a .102 address.

I have 'Disable Distribute IP Addresses' off in the AE Admin utility

wierd...

Is that a typo or are the subnets really 192.x.x.x and 92.x.x.x?

You don't really want to manually assign an IP address within the DHCP pool. I can't tell if the other machines are manually set or DHCP set, but keep manual IPs out of the DHCP range.

It was a typo.

Should be:
192.x.x.x and 192.x.x.x

my router has the real IP from Time Warner Cable and then i have internal Subnet IP for each of the machines (manually set).

G3 .100
imac .101
AE .102

Should i have the linksys router's DHCP do the assigning -- does it make a difference?

Is your server serving IPs as well? It should not be. You should only have one DHCP server distributing IPs. What is your router's local IP (not the WAN IP from your ISP)? What is your DHCP range on the Linksys? Try setting all machines to 'using DHCP' in the Network pref pane under Configure options. If this works, then you're doing something screwy with your manual IPs.
It would also help to map out your LAN, so I can get a better idea of the layout. For example, my LAN looks like this:
cable modem > Asante wireless router > G4, iMac (wired) and iBook (wireless).

Hey. Thanks for your attention to this - i appreciate it....

My Linksys router is serving the IPs via DHCP.

The current configuration is:

Cable modem > Router

Router<> Airport Extreme Base Station
Router<> G3/500 Server
Router<> Enet/Serial Bridge to Serial Printer (HP 4ML)

<> Wireless iMac (Airport)

All three (iMac, G3 and AEBS) are all set to receive their IP addresses from the DHCP server (linksys router)

Starting IP address from the router is: 192.168.1.100

G3 Server: 192.168.1.100
imac: 192.168.1.101
AEBS: 192.168.1.102

I have forwarding on the router to direct all Webserver, FTP, Telnet, Hotline and Remote Desktop ports to forward to the G3 (.100)

Dynamic Routing is set as "gateway" - not sure what that is....

I was able to transfer a 25mb .dmg file:

from iMac to G3: 51 Seconds
From G3 to iMac: 46 Seconds

FTP transfer times were about the same....

According to my calculations i'm transferring at rates between 4.0Mbps and 4.8Mbps on a nominally 11Mbps network. This is not a typical for wireless connections - i don't think.

I guess i'll be happier when i go "EXTREME" and experience better speeds. Then it'll seem more normal, rather than kinda slow.

But i'm still concerned on how slow iTunes and other apps write data to the server drives -- that seems eally slow --- lemme sell this iMac and get the 17" PB and see if the AE card make me happier.

Thanks for your help, and please realy any other thoughts you have.

Just as a follow up ......

After Selling my Imac (11b) and getting a 17" pb (11g extreme))

I now get the following speeds:

I am able to transfer a 25mb .dmg file:

from PB to G3: 20 Seconds
From G3 to PB: 17 Seconds

as opposed to:

from iMac to G3: 51 Seconds
From G3 to iMac: 46 Seconds

with regular flavor "airport"

Nice!!!!
