How do I network the following Mac equipment
together please? . . .
I have the following equipment that I am trying to
network together
iMac Desktop Computer (currently connected to ADSL Modem)
iBook Laptop (with Airport Card inside)
Hub = 5 Port Netgear Ethernet Hub EN2005
ADSL Modem
Airport Base Station (Graphite Version with One Ethernet Port)
Ethernet Cables
I would like to share files over a network between
the iMac and iBook via the Hub and Airport
Basestation
I currently have all the above hardware plugged
via Ethernet cables into the Mini Hub
So the iMac is able to surf the Net and so is the
iBook via the Airport Base Station in the Hub
How do I network them all so they can SEE each
other and move files from one computer to
another wirelessly?
Thank you for your help
It is much appreciated

in order.
DSL connect from wall
DSL modem router.
Hub to uplink port.
string machines off that port, including airport.
Tell airport to not assign dhcp addresses, so that the router will do it on it's own.
Also- this is a networking post, not iMac.

Actually, vmarks' instructions were very specific. Using a phone cord, connect the wall outlet to the telephone jack on the DSL modem. Using a Cat5 jumper, connect from the RJ-45 (network) jack on the modem to the "Uplink" jack on the hub. Using Cat5 jumpers, connect the AirPort Base Station and the iMac to the hub.
For some reason I'm not allowed to post attachments, or I'd give you a nice little picture that illustrates the above text.

Hi
Thank you for your advice
I have already tried the network configuration that you suggest but it doesn't let me see each computer on each computer and exchange files all it does is let me surf the net at the same time on each computer
So what do I do now?
Cheers
Rob

Well, you could start by reading any of a hundred or so threads in this forum talking about exactly what you are trying to do. Being that there are AT LEAST half a dozen of them on the very first page that I can see, you'd easily find many, many more if you'd just try doing a search here. This sort of problem is discussed constantly in this forum. That is most likely why you haven't been getting a lot of responses in this thread.
Basically, you've probably got more than one DHCP server running. The router directly after the modem should be your DHCP server. All others (ABSes) should have this feature disabled.

Wow. I remember when what was meant to be clear, simple advise was not as helpful as intended. Sometimes it's hard to get started with this stuff and the terminology. The questions are asked politely and then the guy gets hammered. Hmmm.
iMacUKGuy, I would use the Airport Admin Utility to examine the settings on your base station. As was said in an earlier post, you have two pieces of hardware, both of which can provide DHCP services. You can only have one peice doing providing that service. The airport base station needs to be configured to do two things.
The first is get its IP address from the ethernet router. It will get this address by setting the Configure TCP/IP using Ethernet to Configure: Using DHCP. It probably is set this way now.
The second step is to select the Network Settings in Airport Admin and check the box for Distribute IP addresses. This allows you to set the other parameters in this window. All the setting should be de-selected except for Enable Airport to Ethernet bridging. Select that, then de-select the Distribute IP addresses box at the top.
Restart the Airport. Restart the iBook with the Airport card. When the iBook is restarted, go to System Preferences->Network. The iBook should be configured to get its IP address using DHCP.
Drop a note and tell us if this worked. There are other questions that could be asked about the ethernet router you have, but since you did have basic internet access we looked at the airport base station config. first.

Actually, the guy politely (?) cross-posted the exact same question in two different forums. As far as terminology being a difficult hurdle, I couldn't agree more. THAT'S WHY THE THREADS ARE ARCHIVED AND SEARCHABLE! Further, nobody got "slammed". He asked for advice and I offered it. Sound advice at that.

Hi
When I try and configure the Base Station using the software called Airport Administration Utility on my iBook (to get to the bit that lets me turn off IP Address sharing) I get the following error message:
"The Airport Administration Utility was unable to read the Configuration of the selected Base Station - An error occured while reading the configuration"
So what do I do now??
PS: My Hub is a Netgear EN2005
PPS: My Airport Base Station is the Graphite version with just one ethernet port

First make sure you have no ethernet cables plugged into the iBook. Then go to System Prefs > Network > Show: Airport. Under Configure, it probably says Using DHCP. Change this to anything else in that list. Click on Apply Now. Now change that back to Using DHCP and click Apply Now again.
Try the Airport Config again. Your iBook and ABS need to be on the same subnet to communicate. This routine forces the iBook to get its' IP from the ABS, which will be on the same subnet. If, after clicking on Apply Now the 2nd time, you get an IP with "Self Assigned" below it, then you've got other problems.
I'm still not clear on your eqpt there. Do you have a hub and a router? Does the router have multiple ports? If you can avoid using the hub, do so.
Again, it should go like this:
phone jack > DSL modem > WAN port on Router > wired computers and ABS via e'net cables > ABS to iBook wirelessly.
This assumes you have multiple ports on the router.

Hi aaanorton
I did all you said in your last post but I still get the Error message
I wonder now if I have the correct Password for it? I thought the default pasword was "public"?
The answers to your other questions are as follows:
PS: My Hub is a Netgear EN2005 with 5 ports
PPS: My Airport Base Station is the Graphite version with just one ethernet port
Help!
Cheers

What are the IP addresses of your iBook and the ABS?
Are you getting the same error message?
Are you trying to join the network?
Try plugging in the iBook to the ABS' e'net port.
